Dr. Jeanine Downie Talks About Winter Skin

Dr_Downie.jpgKeri's national dermatologist spokesperson and accomplished professional Dr. Jeanine Downie took some time to answer a few questions for DeLush readers!

  1. How long have you been practicing in the area of dermatology?

I have been practicing dermatology for 10 years.

  2. What is the most common mistake you see women repeating when it comes to winter skincare?

I see women repeat not using enough moisturizer. A non sticky moisturizer like Keri Renewal Milk Body Lotion is perfect to use at least twice a day.

  3. Could you explain to our readers what happens to create that tight, itchy feeling that can often be associated with winter skin?

Winter itch is related to the lack of humidity in the air which dries out the skin, hair and nails during the fall and winter months. The skin gets chapped and dry, and without proper lotion it can get very itchy.

  4. Do you recommend switching moisturizers in the winter?

I recommended using moisturizers like Keri hand Cream all year long. Many people need to reapply moisturizer more frequently during the winter months

  5. Do you think there is a safest or most effective method for exfoliating in the bath or shower?

The most effective method of exfoliation in the shower is to use a wash cloth, and not a loofah.

  6. What are your personal favorite ways to pamper your skin during cold weather?

My personal favorite ways to pamper my skin includes using a humidifier, using lotion three times a day and using plenty of lip gloss.

The DeLush Interview: Dermalogica On Montana's Annet King

annetKing2.jpgAnnet King, Director of Training and Development for The International Dermal Institute (IDI), is both CIDESCO and CIBTAC certified with more than 18 years of skincare industry experience. She develops the extensive IDI curriculum, oversees the training of nearly 200 instructors worldwide and is recognized globally for her training abilities, expertise and knowledge of all things skin and body related.

Originally founded in 1983 by Jane and Raymond Wurwand, the The International Dermal Institute is headquartered in Torrance, California and currently has 36 Training Centers throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. IDI serves as the foremost authority on professional skin therapy and the premier provider of post-graduate education for professional skin therapists.

Annet has been with IDI for nine years. Prior to joining IDI she was Director of Training for a skin care distribution company in Singapore; supervised the regional training for several major skin care lines, and served as Vice Principal to two CIDESCO certified schools. In addition Ms. King consulted and assisted in the development of skin care centers and spas throughout Southeast Asia.

Ms. King’s dynamic personality, paired with her extensive skin expertise, makes her one of the most in-demand guest speakers at educational events worldwide.

DeLush Asks: You have an extensive background in the skincare industry. How did you become so passionate about it?

Annet Says: It's all I've ever done! I Started when I was 14 yrs old in my friend's mother's beauty salon sweeping up hair, then went to skin and body therapy college after high school, ran a day spa, was an instructor then spa director on cruise ships, lived in Asia and was a spa consultant and then moved to the U.S 9 years ago. I loved the ability to help people improve their skin and self esteem; it's a wonderful career with many opportunities. For me it was always about teaching and travel.

DeLush Asks: What is the key ingredient(s) that you feel women need to make sure they incorporate somehow into their skincare regimens?

Annet Says: Hard to say with so much available today, and it all depends on your personal skin condition. Salicylic acid is wonderful for oily skin, Peptides for aging skin, Hylauronic acid for dehydrated skin and everyone needs to wear sunscreen!

DeLush Asks: Tell us a little about the significance of the FaceMapping process.

Annet Says: It is very important for the consumer to understand their own skin and how to care for it correctly. Receiving a thorough detailed skin analysis where their skin is mapped out inch by inch and actually felt is revolutionary in skincare. Most department stores sell you product by asking you what skin type you are and most consumers don't know or are wrong about their own skin. They will complain of being dry but they have breakouts, so really they are oily with dehydrated skin etc.

We believe at dermalogica that we are the experts; we have the training and passion and we want to educate you about your skin and share with you what you need to use and why. You end up getting much better results on your skin and saving money as you are not wasting it on the wrong products! Facemapping also allows us to customize your skin treatment on the day of your treatment, treating your skin for exactly how it is on that day versus providing you with a cookie-cutter type treatment. This way it's more individual and personalized to your needs.

DeLush Asks: What do you feel is the most innovative product from Dermalogica? Treatments?

Annet Says: There are so many! Daily Microfoliant is one of the most popular products we have. It's one of our "hero" products as it is completely revolutionary in its formula and results. This was the first powder microfoliant introduced into the market and people love the way it makes their skin feel and look. It cleanses, exfoliates and brightens in one easy step!

All of our treatments are designed based upon getting great results and providing the client with an "insane experience". We believe that the dermalogica Face Treatment is the most thorough, comprehensive, professional, result oriented skin treatment available. (We don't use the old-fashioned term 'facial'; it doesn't describe what we do at dermalogica!)

DeLush Asks: How do you personally take care of your skin?

Annet Says: I have oily skin that is also now very much in the aging category so my routine is quite interesting! I love to multi-task as much as possible to save time, and of course dermalogica is the only product I'll use on my face. I start every day by Precleansing with dermalogica's Precleanse, which helps to deep cleanse away deep oil and dead cells, I follow with Dermal Clay Cleanser which I leave on as a 2 minute mini masque (while I have shampoo in my hair) - again, great for combating oily shine and basically it's the minty skin equivalent of brushing your teeth!

When I get out of the shower, I use Daily Resurfacer as a toner/exfoliator and the little finger mitt lets me get into those congested areas around the nose and chin. I use Power Rich as my age-fighting moisturizer and don't use a separate eye product as I love this around my eyes.

My final step is Day Bright mixed into my Treatment foundation; that way I get my SPF coverage, brightening action and a little luminous glow to my make up base! Sounds like a lot but it's no more than a few minutes! I get a professional skin treatment about 3 times per year, as I'm now such a huge fan of our dermalogica microtreatments (which I like to get more frequently to take away the blackheads and lines!).

DeLush Asks: What is your favorite drugstore product?

Annet Says: I'm not ashamed to say that my make up bag has products from Chanel, Lancome, L'Oreal and Maybelline! I love Maybelline Superstay liquid lip colors and have about 20 different shades; it lasts nearly all day and isn't as drying as other long-lasting brands/ The lip balm that comes with it is nourishing and nice and glossy.

DeLush Asks: Finally, what’s one of your favorite skincare tips to share with women?

Annet Says: Seek expert advice from a dermalogica trained skin therapist and make sure you are changing up your routine to suit your skin. You can have really great-looking, healthy skin if you know how to take care of it. Too many women are running to the dermatologist and plastic surgeon for immediate quick fixes but are forgetting about the basics of good skincare.

The DeLush Interview: Dr. Jeannette Graf

Grafheadshot2.jpgChances are Dr. Graf's name sounds familiar. She is well-known for her expertise in skincare as a board certified clinical and research Dermatologist. Not only do her clients and others rely on her extensive knowledge about the science of skincare, but also her ability to blend nutrition and lifestyle counseling into an overall prescription for beauty inside and out.

We were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to ask Dr. Graf some questions that we thought our DeLush readers might be interested in recently. From sun damage to at-home products, read on for some excellent advice and information.

You can find out more about Dr. Graf here and her own line of products as well.

DeLush thanks Dr. Graf for her generous time!

DeLush Asks: Obviously one of the biggest agressors against healthy skin is the sun. At this point, what SPF do you truly recommend daily? Does this differentiate based on skin coloring or should we all take similar precautions?

Dr. Graf Says: The sun is indeed a major aggressor against all skin types. Skin does have a natural UV absorber called melanin. This pigment is found most abundantly in darker skin types. The darker the skin tone the more melanin it contains and the more widely distributed in the epidermis. I recommend wearing a daily broad spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with an SPF of 30 to all of my patients regardless of skin color. During the summer months I recommend even higher SPF levels of 55 with frequent reapplication if outdoors. The differences may be based on the type of sunblock used. For example, light skin may do quite well with a titanium dioxide-containing block while the same product often leaves a bluish caste on African American skin.

Even though lighter skin is more vulnerable to the sun’s damaging rays and has a greater chance of developing skin cancer, no one is immune to skin cancer. In addition, darker skin tones are often very sun sensitive and can burn easily. Certain medications and medical conditions can also increase skin sensitivity to the sun resulting in skin which burns quickly upon exposure.

Finally, there is also a cosmetic consideration which is the tendency of darker skins to develop pigmentary changes. In African American skin which develops large pores and T-zone oil with age as well as blemishes, it is not unusual for drying acne medications to irritate the skin as well as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from the acne blemishes. Asian, East Indian and Hispanic skin types have pigmentary changes as their number one cosmetic concern. For all of these reasons I do not differentiate based on skin color - instead, I urge all patients to take similar precautions.

DeLush Asks: What is your opinion of the surge of recent over-the-counter versions of typically dermatologist or spa-applied treatments? (microdermabrasion, peels, etc.)

Dr. Graf Says: There have been an increasing number of over-the-counter at-home treatments available such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels which, though not dermatology strength, have nonetheless provided consumers with an opportunity to perform effective treatments in the privacy of their home at a great cost savings. If a treatment sold by a reputable company is used in exactly the way it is meant to be - these treatments can provide excellent results.

The downside of all of these at-home treatments is that there is an increased risk of skin complications such as irritation - often severe - from misuse and/or overuse of these products. The common tendency of 'more must be better' can result in 'over-exfoliation' of the skin which is damaging to the skin and at its worst can be severe enough to cause scarring and pigmentary changes.

In order to safely use these very well-made and effective treatments with success, I recommend the following rules:

  • Use a brand from a reputable company so you can trust the research behind it.
  • Do not use more than one type of treatment at a time. For example, if you choose an at-home chemical peel - do not buy a microdermabrasion kit to use in between treatments.
  • Follow the instructions carefully and do not deviate from them.
  • If you are under the care of a dermatologist, check to make sure that it is safe for you to use them. I have many patients who use these treatments at home but I may vary the way they are used based on their skin's needs. Also, certain medications such as Retin-A can cause a strong peeling reaction as can having certain skin conditions such as rosacea.
  • Remember that exfoliation should be gentle for best results and too much exfoliating will hurt the skin.

DeLush Asks: You talk about “mechanical aging” and how we have some control over its effects on our skin by realizing when we are frowning, furrowing our brows, squinting, etc. and attempting to eliminate those habits. I notice that my worst habit is scrunching my brows together a bit while I’m concentrating, and when I catch myself I very often try to ease up and relax that area. But I often still feel a tension in between my brows that will lead them right back into that bad position. Is there something we should do to not only stop the action but release the tension in that area as well, to decrease the chances of returning to the habit automatically? (i.e. facial massage, etc.)

Dr. Graf Says: Mechanical aging is the term used to describe wrinkles and furrows that occur over time from repetitive wrinkle forming movements such as frowning and drawing the brow together. It is very difficult to stop oneself from from these types of movements since they are so much a part of our normal expression and we often frown while we are sleeping, however, it is not impossible. If Botox treatments are not in your radar than I suggest trying a number of different methods - preferable at the same time so they overlap and have additive results.

First, find a way that you have a constant reminder that you're frowning so when you are aware of it you can consciously relax the muscle. Try wearing an adhesive patch (made for sensitive skin if possible to avoid tape irritation) which can provide enough resistance to make you aware. This can be helpful even while sleeping providing enough resistance that the muscle will relax without waking you up.

Facials and regularly performed facial massage with lymphatic drainage by a skilled aesthetician can help muscles relax and decrease habitual frowning. Also, electrical stimulation treatments performed by a skilled professional can strengthen facial muscles that counteract the frowning muscles over time. Other relaxation techniques including acupuncture treatments can be helpful.

Use a good anti-wrinkle serum or cream with ingredients designed to lessen wrinkles and use it regularly, paying close attention to treating you lines. Your treatment in addition to helping the line lessen will also provide a massage and special care and attention to the area.

Finally, the new generation of temporary wrinkle relaxers through the use of GABA inhibitors can help by lessening the frequency and strength of muscle contraction to the frown lines.

DeLush Asks: What do you feel is the best first step toward reversing sun damage?

Dr. Graf Says: The best first step toward reversing sun damage is to prevent it. The earlier you start sun prevention, the less sun damage you will cause. The daily application of a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunblock is a must for everyone - rain or shine. I also recommend wearing a mineral foundation over sunblock for enhanced UVA/UVB protection since most have an SPF of 15 - 20.

Preventing further sun damage also means that smoking cigarettes must stop since smoking increases sun damage.

Skin care to help reverse sun damage starts with retinol which is non-prescription Retin-A or the next best thing. Gently exfoliating the skin on a monthly basis can help the skin's appearance as well as allow treatment products to better penetrate the skin.

Using an anti-wrinkle product with retinol which contain anti-wrinkle peptides can be helpful in reducing the wrinkling that has accumulated and a topical anti-oxidant containing Vitamins E and C as well as green tea and other natural extracts can add more protection to the skin and enhance the action of sunblock.

Use a product to moisturize and hydrate the skin which also contains lipids for the moisture barrier. Many of these moisturizers also contain ingredients to 'brighten ' and revitalize the skin.

That's a start - finally, use a gentle pH balanced facial cleanser so as not to strip precious lipids off the skin and most of all - 'be patient and be good to yourselves."

DeLush Asks: Your skin looks absolutely lovely. It’s clear that you are a good example of proper skincare. If you don’t mind sharing, what is your personal skincare routine?

Dr. Graf Says: Thanks for the compliment. In a word, I employ everything that has been discussed and more. As part skin care junkie and part mad scientist I can tell you that life can be interesting. I am constantly trying new formulations with new ingredients and/or improved ingredients; I'm always first to try them since I have to love them in every sense before I'll continue to research them. I also use treatment products with skin respiratory factors which create energy within the skin cells making them better oxygenated and resulting in brighter skin. I use PHA's rather than AHA's as exfoliants since they are far less irritating and yield so many benefits including smooth, even-toned skin with enhanced radiance. Radiance is my goal and it is achieved by taking care of both inner and outer care. Everyone is capable of achieving radiance.

DeLush Asks: You have your own line of skincare products available on the Home Shopping Network right now. Will they soon be available through other venues?

Dr. Graf Says: Yes, my products have been available through my office and soon they will be available through my website, askdrgraf.com.

DeLush Asks: What would you consider one of the best low-budget skincare products? Luxury product?

Dr. Graf Says: That is a tough one! There are so many and it depends on what you are looking for as a benefit.

If you're on a budget:

  • Retinol – Roc
  • Lightening and Evening Skin Tone – Aveeno Positively Radiant and Neutrogena Visibly firm
  • At-Home Exfoliation – Neutrogena
  • Sunblock – Neutrogena Dry Sheer SPF 55

For luxury high-end skin care:
  • Microdermabrasion – Lancome
  • Wrinkle Treatment – Chanel Precision (very expensive but lovely)

DeLush Asks: What product from your own line are you most proud of?

Dr. Graf Says: Another tough question since I’m proud of all of them...I would have to say my Skin Deep Wrinkle products and my retinol resurfacing product as well as my retinol line.

DeLush Interview: Dr. Anthony Vocaturo, "The Smile Designer"

Known as the “Smile Designer,” Dr. Anthony Vocaturo is the most celebrated cosmetic dentist in the Beverly Hills, New York and New Jersey areas and a world-renowned expert in his field. People who make a living with their appearance trust Dr. Vocaturo to create an award-winning, photogenic smile that complements their entire face. Dr. Vocaturo has been voted best dentist in America by his peers and Consumer Research Counsel of America has named him on of America's top dentists. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has honored cosmetic dentist Dr. Vocaturo with several awards recognizing his numerous achievements in cosmetic dentistry. Read more about Dr. Vocaturo here.

DeLush Asks: There are a lot of new options out there as far as improving the whiteness of one’s smile, but so many ads for products are being tossed our way it’s easy to be confused about which are legitimate choices. Which, in your opinion, are the best whitening options available in both the lower-cost range and the splurge range?

Dr. Vocaturo Says: If you’re looking for low-cost whitening, Crest Whitestrips is one of the most user-friendly, cost-effective products available over-the-counter. For an error-safe, concentrated whitening treatment in one sitting, Zoom Whitening is the ideal splurge.

DeLush Asks: There is some excitement about the new “snap-on smile” lately. Do you think this is a reasonable alternative for those who can’t afford veneers?

Dr. Vocaturo Says: I would not recommend “Snap on smiles” to my patients since they tend to be costly and bulky, and may even go unused after purchase. It’s better to invest into your own smile and perfecting it for your individual features.

DeLush Asks: Do you believe that sugarless whitening gum (such as Orbit White, Trident White, etc.) are as effective in preventing staining as they claim?

Dr. Vocaturo Says: Sugarless whitening gum contains certain peroxides that can help prevent stains, but the overall chewing action alone helps to cleanse teeth.

DeLush Asks: Tea, coffee, and soda all cause staining, but is there one that is less of a threat to a great smile? What are your suggested alternatives?

Dr. Vocaturo Says: All of these refreshments can discolor teeth, but it’s important to brush after any food or drink in order to prevent a majority of stains. Adding milk to coffee may help slightly, but soda connoisseurs should try to stick with clear drinks.

DeLush Asks: What do you feel is the next wave in oral care?

Dr. Vocaturo Says: The latest and greatest evolution in oral care, new mechanisms are effectively scanning for oral cancers. These offer a fantastic, non-invasive alternative to surgery.

We would like to thank Dr. Vocaturo for his time and his wonderful expert advice.
*If you have a question you'd like us to ask Dr. Vocaturo in the future, please feel free to leave those in the comments section!

DuWop Co-Founder and Celebrity Makeup Artist Cristina Bartolucci Talks With DeLush

duwopchr.jpgWe recently had the privelege of asking half of the creative team behind DuWop some questions about the company, product favorites, and even makeup application! Sit down, get cozy, and learn a little bit about Cristina Bartolucci and DuWop.

DeLush Asks: What made you want to begin a career in beauty? How did you get your start?

Cristina Says: I've always been interested in the arts and the idea of working with a human canvas always fascinated me. I decided to move to Los Angeles and become a makeup artist on film and television sets. I started working on indie films, concentrating on special effects makeup, and soon became a personal makeup artist for Bruce Willis and Ben Stiller. Over the years, I ran the makeup department on shows like Felicity and Scrubs, working with celebrities like Uma Thurman, Sandra Bullock, and Jennifer Garner. On set one day, I met hairstylist Laura DeLuisa, my future business partner, and we instantly clicked. We started brainstorming about product ideas and came up with the concept for Igels, which eventually became DuWop's first product. Soon after, our company was born.

Katherine-Heigl-for-web.jpg

Katherine Heigl at the 2006 Emmys Wearing DuWop

DeLush Asks: What’s the biggest makeup mistake you see women making?

Cristina Says: Wearing too much makeup or makeup that is too obvious. Makeup is supposed to enhance our features, not mask them.

DeLush Asks: As usual, there are a lot of makeup trends that have popped up for this season. Which is your favorite?

Cristina Says: I love the metallic eyes we saw on the runway. There is nothing sexier than a smoky eye, if it's done correctly. A perfect smoky eye is clean and crisp, not too dark and overdone. We are launching a smoky eye palette right now called Smoke, which comes in 4 jewel tones- Navy Seal, Olive Branch, Black Gold, and Plum Wine. Each palette has a cake liner and very pigmented shimmery powder, along with a liner brush and a brush to "smoke" the eye. We included directions on the back of the package on how to create the perfect smoky eye-it's a foolproof way to get this trendy look from the runway.

DeLush Asks: Do you have blush or shadow application tricks that you can pass on to DeLush readers?

Cristina Says: I have a great tip on how to apply eyeliner. So many people have difficulty applying eyeliner, but a great way to achieve a perfect line is to pull the eyelid up just under the brow bone with your left hand's middle finger, then apply the liner with your right hand. Holding the skin up ensures that you get a nice, even line, and that it's applied exactly at the lash line.

Jessica-Alba-in-DuWop-at-20.jpg

DeLush Asks: Is there a product from another company that you think has really hit the mark?

Cristina Says: I love the brand Philosophy. I think they have a strong message and their products are all so imaginative.

DeLush Asks: Out of all of the products you’ve developed at DuWop up to this point, do you have a personal favorite?

Cristina Says: Lip Venom is our baby. We are so proud that we created the very first lip plumper on the market, which has inspired dozens of imitations. It was created in 1999 on the set of NBC's "Felicity". After love scenes, my actors would come to me for touch-ups and have these beautiful, flushed plump lips. We wanted to create a product that mimicked the same effect as kissing, so we went to work in Laura's kitchen, mixing up ingredients that would increase the circulation to the lips, like kissing, to plump them up. Once we had a formula we liked, we'd bring it to the set and have Jennifer Garner and Keri Russell test it. Eventually we came up with a formula for Lip Venom.

Cristina and Laura

DeLush Asks: Tell us about your own beauty routine, on a normal day, starting with skincare and ending with makeup.

Cristina Says: I wash my face with La Prairie's Foam Cleanser and apply Clarins Line Prevential Day Cream. After moisturizing, I use DuWop's double-ended Sub-Surface stick to hydrate my undereye area and spot treat any blemishes and problem areas. Then depending on what my day looks like, I use either DuWop's Surface concealer under my eyes and over any redness, or if I have to leave the office for a meeting, our Revolotion Face Tinted Moisturizer which has a little more coverage and SPF. Our Amber Eyes palette is my favorite, as it brings out blue eyes. I blend several of the shades together and line my eyes with the palette's cream liner, then finish with a coat or two of Lashlacquer Mascara in Carbon Black. I dab some Blush Therapy in Vivaldi on the apples of my cheeks, then apply our Venom Gloss in Wisteria, a soft rosy pink. At night I wash my face with the same cleanser as in the morning, but use Clarins Line Prevention Multi Active Night Cream before bed.

Thank you Cristina! Visit DuWop now to check out their latest products and view their revamped website.

Thursday Carmindy Tip: Making Fall Eye Colors STAY PUT!

Carmindy is a nationally-renowned makeup artist (also from TLC's What Not To Wear), and last week she told us about her favorite new Fall products. Today, she answers another question!

DeLush Asks: Fall is a great time to enjoy lush eye colors. Many of our readers talk about having great difficulty making shadow and liner stay true and not smudge off during the day. Do you find that primers really can fix this? Any other suggestions?

Carmindy Says: I swear by Paula Dorf Transformer liquid to keep shadow liner in place. As far as eye shadow on the lids staying put you just need to apply a bit of foundation then powder to the lids and there is your primer. In the case of really oily skin adding a bit of mattifying gel on the lid before applying foundation will help control the greasies.

Thank you, Carmindy! Visit her site here.

Expert Q&A: Carmindy Answers a DeLush Reader Question

*Stay tuned today for the big DeLush surprise!

Carmindy, a nationally-renowned makeup artist, has worked with InStyle, Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and beauty icons such as Isabella Rossellini and Cindy Crawford. She's also one of the makeover pros from TLC's What Not To Wear. Today Carmindy answers a DeLush reader question, but also keep a lookout for Fall beauty tips throughout the second annual Fall Is Fabulous Event at DeLush each week during September!

DeLush Reader Dana Writes:
"I cannot wear foundation because I inherited these absolutely awful pores from my father that dwarf the Grand Canyon across my cheeks and nose (Okay, slight exaggeration) and foundation sinks into them and you can literally connect the foundation dots. It makes my pores look worse than before I put the foundation on. I also have extremely oily skin and most foundations I've found make it feel like I'm either wearing a mask that the oil is trying to escape from or the foundation smears off because of the oil. I once tried a tinted moisturizer and that seemed to work but I'm not sure where to get them from."

Carmindy Says:
"Well, handling the problem before trying to cover it up is key. Pore size cannot be changed but what we do with them can be. Keep them clean by using a glycolic lotion at night that will get rid of sebum and dead skin making them look smaller. Applying a matifying lotion before foundation will help control oil slicks during the day.

Try the Era by Classified Cosmetics foundation. This oil-free spray foundation can be applied by spraying a non-latex sponge then sweeping over the face to conceal imperfections and minimize the look of pores. Follow with a light dusting of translucent powder."

Thank you Carmindy!
*If your budget is low, follow Carmindy's advice and try Sally Hansen's Airbrush Foundation (available in drugstores) or if you're ready to splurge try Dior DiorSkin Airflash spray foundation (these are not oil-free and may not be as effective for very oily skin as Era's spray).

The DeLush Interview: Liz Quesnelle, Esthetician

Meet Liz Quesnelle, founder of Le Bon Visage in Chicago, Illinois. We recently were able to ask Liz some questions that we've come across in your emails and also some questions we've been wondering about. You can read more about Liz at the end of this interview. Here we go!

What is the most common skin problem you see?
Do all women really need to use a toner or astringent?
How much is TOO much when it comes to exfoliating?
Does it really matter in which direction you apply facial cleansers, etc. to your face?
A reader asked us how to get rid of fine lines around the mouth. Any suggestions?
What is your favorite recipe for an at-home facial mask?

DeLush: What is the most common skin problem you see for your clients?

Liz: The most common skin care problem that I see at Le Bon Visage is the over-drying of skin. There is a tendency for people to think they are much oilier than they are. They also mistakenly believe that oil is the enemy of the skin but nothing could be further from the truth. Sebum, which is the oil produced by the skin, serves to lubricate the skin and protect it from the elements. By cleansing the skin frequently, using only oil-free products and over-using alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids, the skin loses it’s natural defense against evaporation, dirt, and bacteria. In addition, often when the skin feels that it is short of oil, the body will speed up generation of the oil, causing the skin to begin to over-produce.

DeLush: Do all women really need to use a toner or astringent?

Liz: No. It is my personal belief that toner has no real purpose anymore. Originally, it was developed to restore the pH balance of the skin, which is essential for the body’s defense system. These days, most products are created to fall within the range of the skin’s pH – around 5.5 – 7 – thereby causing no disturbance to the acid mantle.
Another reason that, according to manufacturers, toners are needed is to remove traces of make-up and dirt left behind after cleansing. If there are traces of dirt and make-up left behind after a person cleanses, then he/she need to take the time to cleanse properly. As for astringents – these are far too harsh for most people’s skin and are best avoided. They can dry the skin out, causing just as many problems as the acne it was to fix.

DeLush: How much is TOO much when it comes to exfoliating?

Liz: When it comes to exfoliating, what constitutes too much really depends on each individual’s skin and the strength of the products used. As a general rule, I recommend that my clients exfoliate with an OTC acid or enzyme 2x per week, unless they are highly sensitive. Then it’s just once per week. I also recommend that all exfoliating be done at night, where the fresh skin won’t come into contact with UVA and UVB rays for several hours. I also recommend that my clients be very careful with any exfoliant that contains ground shells or pits. Often times, these shells don’t have well-rounded edges, thus leaving sharp edges which can cause microscopic tears in the skin.

DeLush: Does it really matter in which direction you apply facial cleansers, etc. to your face?

Liz: There is really no conclusive evidence either way. However, it is my opinion that everything should be applied to your face in gentle, upward strokes. These strokes should be light enough that the skin doesn’t move when you are applying the products; rather the products glide over the skin. Since we all occasionally rub too hard, it’s better to be moving upwards. Why give gravity a helping hand?

In addition, these upward strokes can help with circulation – both of blood and of lymph, which helps to nourish your skin and get the “garbage” taken away.

DeLush: A reader asked us not too long ago how she could get rid of fine lines around the mouth. Any suggestions?

Liz: Unfortunately, lines around the mouth behave like any other wrinkle: Once the line is there, you can’t really get rid of it without surgery or an injectable, such as Restylane. However, you can reduce their appearance and keep new ones from developing by following these rules:

  1. Keep the area clean, but don’t over-cleanse the area. People have a tendency to over-wash their skin, stripping it of essential oils. This results in dry and flaky skin, which makes creases look much deeper than they are. If your skin isn’t terribly oily, I recommend that you cleanse the skin once per day.
  2. Keep the skin moisturized on the inside. Cells are made primarily of water. When they lack it, the cells are flat and dried out. They are unable to reflect light, which makes the skin look old and tired. By drinking plenty of water, your skin will look plumper.
  3. Keep the skin moisturized on the outside. By using a moisturizer that contains a humectant (such as hyaluronic acid/sodium hyaluronate), moisture from the air is attracted to your skin and held to it by these humectants. The result? A serious decrease in line appearance. Another chief ingredient to look for is peptides. Many peptides are extremely effective in stimulating collagen production, resulting in the temporary filling in of lines.
  4. Use sunscreen and don’t smoke! The sun is the major catalyst for skin aging. Cigarette smoke is number two. Combined, these will dry out your skin and result in a decrease of collagen – the skin’s support system – and dehydration. Always wear an SPF of 30 and don’t forget lip balms that contain an SPF!
  5. Avoid Chemical Peels on the area. Chemical peels go deep and can cause hypopigmentation (lightening of skin). When you are treating just one area of the face, this hypopigmentation is rather noticeable.

DeLush: What is your favorite recipe for an at-home facial mask?

Liz: I am a big fan of avocados and their moisturizing abilities. I like to take a small avocado, remove the peel and the pit and smash it up thoroughly in a bowl. I then add a touch of honey (which acts as an antiseptic), and a tablespoon of milk or heavy cream. This provides some lactic acid (which is a gentle exfoliant). I apply to the entire face and let it dry. When it dries, I remove it with warm water and a soft towel. Your skin looks so nourished and refreshed afterwards.

About Liz: Liz always had an interest in cosmetics and skin care. While attending college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, she studied theatre with a focus in costume design and theatrical make-up.

Post-college brought her success in the Marketing and Advertising worlds, but she found desk work unfulfilling and felt herself thinking more and more about skin care. Liz left her marketing job and joined with Dr. Lee West assisting her in the Dermablend Corrective Cosmetic Cover Clinic at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Liz assisted Dr. West in the writing of an atlas of skin disorders and how they could benefit from corrective cosmetics and also assisted in a patient study sponsored by L’Oreal Cosmetics.

Finding her interests piqued, Liz enrolled in the Aveda Institute and graduated in 2003 with her certification in Esthiology and soon afterwards passed the Illinois State board exam and became a licensed esthetician.

After becoming licensed, Liz founded Le Bon Visage in 2003 with a simple idea in mind – providing quality skin care with an informative and educational bent. Realizing that facials alone are not enough to make a change in her clients’ skin condition, Liz came up with the most comprehensive follow-through available in the Chicago area, complete with personalized product and home-care regimen recommendations via email. By making her expertise accessible to her clients 24-7, her clients see the benefits of their facials carry over into good skin all year round.

Le Bon Visage has been mentioned in the Chicago Tribune, Les Nouvelle Esthetiques and WeddingChicago.com.

DeLush Interview: Makeup Artist Carmindy Acosta

carmindy.jpgPerhaps you've seen her work her magic on TLC's "What Not to Wear". Or maybe you've seen the results of her work in magazines like Cosmopolitan, Elle, Vogue, GQ, Essence, Details, Marie Claire and InStyle or on celebrities such as Cindy Crawford, Isabella Rossellini, Heidi Klum and more. Makeup artist Carmindy Acosta is an incredible talent, and here she shares some of her fabulous tips with DeLush readers:

DeLush: How did you get your start as a makeup artist? What led you to that career choice?

Carmindy: My mother was a watercolorist; when I was a child and I would watch her paint for hours. She bought me a subscription to Elle magazine in the 8th grade and I was hooked. I wanted to live in that world of beauty. So for christmas one year I told me dad I wanted a Hollywood style makeup mirror and a directors chair and I began practicing on friends and family using techniques I learned from watching my mother.

DeLush: Before a woman even begins to put on her makeup, what do you like to recommend she uses as a moisturizer and/or makeup base?

Carmindy: A moisturizer with a built in sunscreen. You're makeup will go on smooth and even and you will be protected all day from the sun.

DeLush: There a couple of burning questions I hear about two things you recommend on the show a lot - spray foundation and bright coral/pink blush. Can I ask - what foundation are you using there and what brands/shades of blush are your favorites?

Carmindy: I like Era Spray foundation from Classified Cosmetics but I spray a sponge that has been dabbed in a bit of moisturizer first then apply. If you spray it directly onto the face the coverage will be uneven and a bit dry. My favorite universal shade of blush is Mac Flower Power.

DeLush: You have a fabulous ability to make women's eyes look gorgeous and sparkling. What general rules can women follow at home to select the right shades and application techniques to make their eyes really beautiful?

Carmindy: First off-less is more! Use the right products in the right places to enhance your own eye shape and color and never try to recreate a shape that you don't have. Shades are not as important as where you put things. I like highlighting instead of contouring so choose a shimmery light vanilla, white, pale gold or champagne shade and apply it under the brow and on the inside corner of the eye. This will capture the light and create that sparkle. Next smudge a liner directly into the roots of the lashes not above them and smooth over with a Q-tip so you get a nice soft smudge. Black mascara is key to bringing out the eyes.

DeLush: What are one or two things that you constantly see women doing WRONG with their makeup?

Carmindy: Using colors and techniques from their high school days.

DeLush: Now that it's getting warmer and we're getting ready for summer, what products do you recommend for women who deal with excessive oil during that time of year?

Carmindy: Mattifying gels applied in the areas that get too oily and take blotting papers with you for day time touch ups. Don't keep powdering or you will look cakey.

DeLush: Conversely to that, many women deal with drying, more sensitive skin as they get older. What products do you suggest to alleviate that and maintain a fresh dewy makeup look?

Carmindy: I love lotions that contain glycolic acid to slough off any dead skin and flakey patches and load up on thicker creams and eye balms for night time. Use sugar in your shower about 2-3 times a week to scrub your face and get a sweet complexion.

DeLush: Finally, a little fun - if someone took away all of the products you use personally on your own skin (who would be that mean?) and said you could only choose 3 cosmetic products and 1 skincare product to ever use again, what would you choose to keep?

Carmindy: A day cream with an spf, black mascara, berry pink lip gloss, and a berry pink cream blush.

Thank you SO much for taking time to talk with us, Carmindy!

*Stay tuned for periodic makeup tips for DeLush readers from Carmindy in the future!

DeLush Asks: This month’s theme on DeLush.com is “We Love Color!” – all about getting our readers out of their winter blahs by adding touches of color into their beauty routines. I guess the first overall question would be…what kinds of touches can women do when applying makeup now that will help brighten their appearance?
Belinda Says: A woman should try to go for a Luminous look. Stay away from Matted out skin. Put a little shimmer in the corners of eyes & on the apples of the cheeks. This can be achieved with a cream blush swiped over eyelids & apples, for "Glowing" skin.

DeLush Asks: What are your own favorite shades for this season to accentuate with?
Belinda Says: I love the Bibo tricolor eye shadow in Luxe. It has pinks & plums with a bit of shimmer. A frosty plum is really hot.

DeLush Asks: What do you look for in a good makeup brush? Any recommendations?
Belinda Says: You want a brush that will hold the powder but soft enough to glide on smoothly. You want to make sure to get good brushes or else they will just fall apart and the bristles will end up on your face in very strange areas. MAC makes nice eye shadow brushes, they are contoured perfectly & Bibo makes a very nice powder & blush brush that is very soft over your face & neck area.

DeLush Asks: What is your method for achieving a flawless face as a foundation for color?
Belinda Says: I have found a spray-on foundation that will make your complexion "Flawless" - Christian Dior Air Flash. You just spray it on and it dries to a powdery finish that is beautiful. The best part is you can't mess it up.

DeLush Asks: What is the biggest beauty mistake you see women doing with their makeup?
Belinda Says: Women that only line the outside of their lips....DO THE WHOLE MOUTH!

DeLush Asks: Are there certain types of products, in your opinion, that women can get just as well at the drugstore? Which products are worth splurging on in a department store/specialty retail store?
Belinda Says: Mascara, L'Oreal makes my favorite "Lash Out". You do not need to pay tons for mascara or lip liners & especially Fad/seasonal things. DO spend your money on good creams with spf in them, face wash and eye creams.

DeLush Asks: Where might our readers have recently seen your work?
Belinda Says: At the Golden Globes.

DeLush Asks: Finally, if someone made you get rid of all of your makeup (that you use personally) and only let you keep four items, what could you not live without?
Belinda Says: Christian Dior Air Flash, mascara, Bibo powder blush in Smitten, and Bibo lip gloss in GLOW (you can even use this gloss on eyelids & cheeks).

DeLush Asks: Now answer the same question for skincare products.
Belinda Says: Thick moisturizer with spf in it, Graham Webb Daily Strength shampoo and condtioner, and Palmer's cocoa butter for the body.

THANK YOU, Belinda!

Fall Makeover: Bobbi Brown Edition

I was really surprised when I saw Bobbi Brown's Fall Face. In magazine after magazine I looked through this fall I saw a sea of very dramatic, very smoky eyes. Totally pale lips beyond nude. And here in front of me is this natural look, with defined but not overly dramatic eyes, gorgeous jewel-toned lips, and glowing skin. Did I want a Bobbi Brown fall makeover? Absolutely!

For the event I attended, several of Bobbi Brown's make-up artists were on hand to demonstrate proper application and show off their new colors. My make-up artist, Jen, worked beside Bobbi Brown at Fashion Week in New York, and I can see why. She seemed to have a real eye for color. I wanted to provide a full interview for you, but the artists aren't allowed to provide quotes for media, and so I am just going to pass on what I learned from her.

I asked Jen why Bobbi Brown wasn't pushing the smoky eyes look, and she explained that she doesn't always buy into the trend. Her ideal is that her customers look like themselves -- only better. Fair enough!

Jen spent a lot of time making my skin look great. After she cleaned it, she applied some moisturizer, and once she saw my skin suck in the moisture like it was water, she applied even more. She paid special attention to moisturizing the area around my eyes, which despite my twice-daily eye cream applications, were really dry. Once I was fully moisturized, my skin looked great, so I actually needed less makeup. She thoroughly concealed my dark under-eye circles, but when it came time for foundation, she really used very little. Then to make my skin really glow, she dusted bronzer on my forehead, cheeks, and chin.

For my eyes, she used very light pinks and plums. I never buy shadows this light, so I was really surprised by her color selection, but it looked great. She started with a winter white over my whole lid, which brightened my eyes and seemed to give my brow a little more definition. Then, she lined my eyes with jet black eyeliner across the entire top of my lid with their Gel eyeliner. She used a pretty thick line, but it didn't look overdone because of the light shadow colors. She finished up with two types of mascara, one to plump up my lashes and the other to lengthen and curl. That's something I'd never quite considered, using multiple mascaras to fulfill specific needs.

My review of Bobbi Brown lip colors for fall follows below, but the deep plum color in the lipstick really finished off the look. Everyone who walked by commented on the finished product. My makeover was completed around 2PM, but I was so pleased by the results that I wore my makeup out for the night and it lasted until the wee hours.

Once my makeover was completed, I asked Jen what she recommended for Fall for all our lovely DeLush readers. Her answer? Moisturizer. When the air becomes cooler and drier, you really have to switch to something that deeply moisturizes your skin, so that you can keep that glow.

Stay tuned to DeLush in the following weeks for some more Bobbi Brown related features. I purchased several other products after my makeover that I will be reviewing. Plus, later this month I will be giving you a special make-up how-to session on applying concealer. Your undereye circles are going to disappear. Seriously.

-- Jen
