NY Fashion Week: "Fresh Out of the Water" at Herve Leger by Max Azria

The Finished Makeup LookThe inspiration for the look at Herve Leger by Max Azria was the girls from the Bond movies.  The make-up artist wanted to highlight beautiful skin with honed bones.  The focus of the look? A wet eye, which they achieved with MAC gold Pigment.  The eye was outlined with MAC Technakohl Eyeliner in Photogravure to give it an additional punch along with a nice coat of MAC Plushlash.  To give additional focus to the eyes, the artist used a "chalky" lip.  Beyond a simple nude, it was a pale, pale matte pink that had the effect of erasing the lips from the model's face.

The result was a simple, sophisticated look that is pretty and wearable for those with warmer skin tones.  If you've got blue undertones, you can still achieve the look, but I would recommend a little more color on the lips to avoid looking frostbitten.

NY Fashion Week: Blue Injection at Miss Sixty

misssixty_gucci.jpgI talked to M.A.C.'s phenomenal key make-up artist Gucci Westman to get her inspiration on the look for the Miss Sixty show last Sunday. She was working for a mixture of 80s bohemian female figures like Chrissy Hynde and Joan Jett. She stopped before getting too specific with the look to avoid making it look overdone with the clothes.

The focal point of the look was definitely the eyes, and to make them pop, a blue/black Fluidline was used on the eyes, with a little smudge of blue in the corners. And to top it off, lots of mascara on the top and bottom. With the drama all on the eyes, the lips stayed natural with sheer colors.

NY Fashion Week: Natural Beauty at Victorya Hong

On the runway at na be by Victorya HongOur readers who have been watching Project Runway this season might be interested in the look at the Victorya Hong show (she was cut from the line of contenders on an episode that aired a couple of weeks ago). She was one of my early favorites, so I was absolutely thrilled to see her show in New York. I talked with hairstylist Patrick Ferrera and make-up artist Lynsey Laskowski (both from David Evangelista at Cornelia) about the look they created the runway.

NY Fashion Week: Warrior Chic at Abaeté

The Finished Look at AbaetéI talked to David Cruz, the key Redken artist for the Abaeté show last Saturday, and he told me all about the inspiration for one of my personal favorite looks from this season's fashion week. With all of the positive female role models out there today, from Hillary Clinton to powerful fictional characters like Sarah Connor of the new Terminator television series, this is the year of woman. The concept behind this year's collection was Joan of Arc, only prettier, and without having to appear masculine. The look is strong and beautiful, polished but with just enough of an edge to be fun. NY Fashion Week: Skin Is the Focus at Jonathan Saunders

Backstage at Jonathan Saunders

This Sunday I talked to M.A.C. Artist Victor Gordon at Tunnel, where Jonathan Saunders was showing his collection in New York for the first time. He created a simple make-up look with skin as the star, showcased by a minimalistic hairstyle from Guido Palau, Creative Consultant for Redken. Many designers and artists that I talked to this season told me that their inspiration was a strong woman, a powerful woman, and this is just one of many looks on that theme that I saw this year. Want to know how to achieve it? There's more after the jump.

Fall Trend Watch: Illuminating Powders and Liquid Highlighters

It's all about achieving a glamorous glowy look with this season's touches of shimmer and sheen. The benefit of utilizing these products is that you can add some dimension and a healthy radiance to your skin with some very strategically-placed application. You can use an incredibly light hand and still achieve a pretty result that is so subtle that most people won't know quite why you're glowing. On the other hand, you can apply a bit more for extra emphasis (especially on the eye area, near the inner corners and just under the eyebrows), if you're looking to create all-out glamour.

Liquid highlighters tend to be a bit more on the subtle side, creating a "glow-from-within" look, while illuminating powders can range from barely-there to gorgeous gleam. Regardless of which you prefer to use, you can easily add some radiance to your look - WHO says you need a tan to glow?

There's no shortage of products out there right now made just for this purpose, so here are some of the hot ways to harness the power of illumination:

smashboxphotoop.jpg

Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener
Especially for the eye area, $18.00, smashbox.com

Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener
"Photo shoots often start at the crack of dawn when even models and celebs don’t look their best and dark circles loom. That’s why we created this innovative under eye brightener that immediately wakens and brightens skin while adding moisture to prepare for concealer application. Contains lots of skin-boosting ingredients too, like Vitamin C, red wine extract, peptides and marine collagen, to help fill in those nasty little wrinkles."

Fall Trend Watch: Smoky Gold Eyes

I always like the way that smoky eyes work, but in practice, there seems to be a (not so) thin line between smoky and Tammy Faye Baker. And then I was at the beach last month and admired my friend's eye makeup (she's a M.A.C.-trained make-up artist) and she told me that people always think in order to do the smoky eye they have to go with charcoal, gray and black. But some people just don't have the coloring for that, so it makes sense to bring a softer palette but use some of the same methods you may have tried in the past with more...dramatic...results. Enter the gold palette.

Gold is really hot this fall, and combining gold accents in your eyeshadow with sand, copper and brown can give a great look that can be used for work or play. It looks polished instead of over the top.

So how do you get this look? Start with a sand or beige color (matte or slightly pearly, not too much sparkle) as the base for the eyelid. This should be slightly brighter than your own skin tone, but not overly noticeable alone. Some good products to try: Laura Mercier Cream Eyeshadow in Platinum or Powder Eyeshadow in Star Fruit.

Next, you'll be adding a little bit of color to the eyelid and to the undereye. Choose a copper or light brown for this step. If you're using this look for daytime, choose a less sparkly shade, but for nighttime this is an excellent place to introduce an iridescent shadow. Apply this darker shade along the crease of the eye, outward at the corner of the eye, and all the way down to the lash line. I used: Prestige Cosmetics Gold Dust Eyeshadow

Then, using a smudger brush or an eyeliner brush, apply a slightly darker shade as an eyeliner by wetting the brush slightly. Apply a thicker line than you normally would for eyeshadow, or just apply plenty of shadow and smudge it. Be sure to do the same under the eye as well. I used: L'Oreal HIP Shocking Pigments Shadow in Tenacious.

Next, you'll use a liquid eyeliner to give the eye definition. If you're skin tone is darker, you may be able to get away with a black here, but those with fair to medium skin tones should stick with a brown. Apply the eyeliner along the entire lash line of the top lashes. You probably don't need to extend beyond the outer corners of the eye since there's so much going on already. On the bottom lashes, line the eye with the liquid liner only on the inside of the lash line. Some product suggestions: L'Oreal Lineur Intense in Mineral or Kiss Me Eyeliner in Brown.

Finish it off with a nice mascara that matches the eyeliner and you're all done! To finish off the look, use a coral blush (the cream ones give a nice, natural look) and a nude or slightly pink lipstick that will give your eyes the center stage.

Fall Trend Watch: Hair Powder

A lot of the beauty and fashion trends we've been seeing for this Fall season are borrowed from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but this particular trend has root that go much further back. You've all seen paintings from the 1700s with the well-to-do wearing powdered hair or wigs. At that time, the white powder may have just been a fashion statement, or maybe it was just a way to keep their hair fresh after days of wear. At any rate, the hair powders they used then and the powders available today have predictably come a long way.

What is hair powder?
Hair powder is a gritty powder used to help absorb oils in the hair and provide texture for the hair. Some hair powder products, like the Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder product, are based on cornstarch as the main ingredient. The hair has increased volume and holds style more evenly due to the added texture, and the oil absorption allows the wearer of hair powder to decrease the frequency of shampoos.

How do I use it?
Apply hair powder at the roots and work into the hair until the powder is completely dissolved. Allow the powder to dry completely, and then brush through the hair to help spread the powder to the ends of the hair and remove any excess. At that point, style the hair or tease roots for lasting body and style.

Who should add this to their beauty routine?
Those who live in high humidity or have naturally oily hair, those with thin or fine hair who want to add body and style.

Fall Trend Watch: Can You Wear This Trend? Black Nail Polish

It's everywhere - all of the magazines, on of a LOT of celebrities. This black nailpolish trend is HOT right now. At least that's what they're telling us. But can everyday women pull it off? Well, I got all the DeLush gals on board to try it out, and here were our thoughts. -Melissa

alissa.jpg(Alissa)
Polish Used: Living Nightmare Black Nail Polish

"I made an appointment for a manicure on Saturday morning for a nice treat. She used "Living Nightmare" brand, which I can only assume is a leftover from last Halloween. It actually turned out quite nicely considering the goopiness. After the topcoat was applied, it looked like patent leather or vinyl.

I don't think I will try this again anytime soon. I felt a little self-concious about it, like I should be listening to My Chemical Romance and wearing combat boots. I think it might be kind of sexy with the right outfit, though. Can't wait to see how everyone else liked it!"

jamie.jpg(Jamie)
Polish Used: Cover Girl “Boundless Color” in Midnight Magic (#610)

"Knowing this color choice would be dicey for a pale redhead, I chose the warmest shade I could find – it bordered on navy, and had a hint of sparkle.

Disappointingly, the polish was thin and runny. I needed 3 coats (!) just to even out the color. Even if the polish was of a higher quality, this is one fall trend to which I won’t be subscribing."

toya.jpg(Toya)
Polish Used: Rimmel Lasting Finish Lycra Wear in Black Satin

"I have to say that I'm not feeling this black nail polish phenomenon AT ALL! It just doesn't look pretty to me - it looks like you painted your nails with permanent marker. Besides which, black is just not a good color for me - I think it makes my skin, which usually has really warm undertones, look ashen.

If I were to try to be in on this trend, I would go a really, really dark blood red or even a dark brown as a more fitting alternative."

jen.jpg(Jen)
Polish Used: CHANEL Black Satin (color available in department stores)

"I just had to have Black Satin, the hot color from Chanel this Fall, but I wasn't so sure that the black nailcolor trend was going to work for me. I have really long nail beds, and even though I had trimmed them short, I was sure that I would look too goth. And not that the goth look isn't in right now, but as someone who wears a lot of pink, feminine clothes...well, frankly, I thought I would be the subject of amusement at work and among friends. I am happy to say that I found this trend very wearable, from art parties to important business meetings. Not only did I not hear any snickers from afar, I didn't even get any comments about them! I thought the color, which is actually either a deep dark purple or a deep dark brown (I can't decide), looked very chic with my updated fall wardrobe and I never felt uncomfortable with my bold nail color.

Now, the wearability of the trend and the wearability of the color are two very different things. I didn't go to the nail salon to have them do the painting as I had planned, so this may be a lack of skill on my part, but I found that the color went away -- not chipped, exactly, but wore down -- more quickly than with other colors I've used. I also noticed that the color lost its luster more quickly. I have to apply a new layer of topcoat very frequently, every other day to be exact, to keep the polish looking shiny and fresh.

I am definitely more willing to experiment with these dark colors after trying the black, but I may end up going with a chic plum or chocolate on a regular basis if I find it easier to maintain."

melissablackpolish.jpg(Melissa)
Polish Used: Sally Hansen's Xtreme Wear in Black Out

"I've been using this pretty much for the past month and right from the start, I had no trouble getting used to it at all. I've been keeping my nails pretty short the past few years anyway, so that wasn't an issue for me. It really is KEY to keep your nails short for this. I have small hands, and I think that may be another slight advantage to the success of the look.

This particular polish got compliments everywhere I went. I'm not kidding. Every time I checked out of a store at the counter someone would comment on how shiny they were (I did NOT even use topcoat) and our veterinarian (shut up, she's young!) even commented on how she'd tried black polish before but it just didn't look as good as this one did.

It's true that you have to touch it up a little bit every 3 days or so, even with this polish which I have in other colors and wears very well. This shade seems to wear off the tips of the nails much quicker than other colors. As soon as you notice that, just apply another (thin!) coat and you're good as new. The things I noticed that are imperative to make this look work are that the polish needs to be smudge-free (be careful and you can do it, I did mine myself!), shiny, and when you apply it, start JUST above the cuticle. Don't go all the way down to it. This really looks more professional and clean.

For me, this look gets a definite thumbs up. I didn't feel obvious in it at all, and I think it's kind of hot. The re-applying isn't a big deal when you don't have to spend a lot on each bottle."

Fall Trend Watch: Bright Lips

For those of you who subscribe to DeLush Delivered, you've already read some ways that you can brighten your fall look with lipcolor. This is a trend we at DeLush have been seeing again and again on the runways and in the pages of our favorite magazines, and here's the rundown on some of the best ways that you can put the emphasis on lips in your beauty routine.

Shiny Red Lips

Photo Credit: Plamen Petkov, September 2006 Harper's Bazaar Magazine

Shiny Red Lips

Pick your favorite red lipstick and paint those lips! The Chanel lipstick reviewed earlier today is a good choice for our fair-skinned readers, but any good red lipstick will certainly do. Although the look this season calls for less meticulously shaped mouths, I find that with bright reds, mistakes are more glaring. For this reason, it's good to exfoliate the lips first to give an even surface for the color, apply red lipsticks on well-moisturized lips, and use a matching lip liner to define the border and keep the red from bleeding. Once your lips look great, blot them well and then apply a thick coat of a super-shiny gloss. Two glosses that work well for this are MAC Lip Glass and Urban Decay XXX Shine.

Lilac Lips

Photo Credit: September 2006 Glamour Magazine

Purple or Lilac Lips

This trend may be a take-off of last season's lavender eyeshadow trend, once they discovered that everyone looks good in the right shade of violet. When looking for a purple-tinged lipstick, it's important to keep skin tone in mind. Try on a few at your department store counters to get a feel for which purple looks best on you. Be sure to wear some color with the lighter, lilac shades, since they tend to wash out most skin tones.

Red Stained Lips at Prada

Photo Credit: Cannonieri & Fortis, September 2006 ELLE Magazine

Red Stained Lips

This may be the hottest trend of them all: stained lips ruled on the runways for Fall 2006. The colors become more muted in the stains, but the look is anything but drab. Pick out bright, vibrant colors and layer them on to get the amount of color you prefer. The benefit of lip stains is that they don't transfer easily and last a really long time, so they're perfect for long meetings in the office. This is one trend you don't want to miss out on this fall!

Melissa in MAC Ruby Woo

Hot Pink and Red

This is the season to put away the nude colors and the sheers from months before and bring on the color. The new lines from each of the major cosmetic companies are pushing bright, rich colors, and that means fushia and red are back in action. Use them to brighten up the darker colors of your Fall wardrobe and bring focus to the face.
