DeLush Roundtable: How do you keep your skin soft and moisturized this time of year?

hand2.jpgTell us how you fight off dry air inside and cool wind outside. Some people swear by their mothers' ritual of applying vaseline all over; others have their own tried-and-true formulas for keeping their skin from turning into a pasty, parched problem. Tell us...what is YOUR sure-fire way to keep skin healthy and hydrated, especially when things turn cold?

I swear by Propoline's body moisturizer. It smells wonderful, goes on like a milk (very light) so it's surprising that it moisturizes so well, but it DOES! Plus, it smells wonderful. They also made a cream just for feet called Pedi Care--it's great for your hands, too. I keep a tube on my nightstand for rubbing on my feet, hands, elbows and knees just before bed. My hubbie loves the way I smell, too.

Winter is the worst time for me, skin wise. I have such dry sensitive skin, its rediculous. I found a product that works AMAZING for my Death Valley Dry face. St. Ives Collagen Elastin Essential Moisturizer. When I first opened it, I was skeptical. Its very thick! But when I put it on, my skin felt like butter, it was great! I normally have to apply moisterizer twice on my face, but I only had to use this once.

During the winter, I make sure to drink a lot of water. Then in the mornings and before bed, after washing my face, I slather on this lotion. It works great under makeup and in the morning, my face looks refreshed and it actually GLOWS!

I was recently at high altitude in the Chilean Andes for work. It was the middle of winter and very cold. It's one of the driest regions on Earth, so dry you get nosebleeds, itchy skin etc. I'd forgotten a moisturiser so picked up a pot of Neutrogena Intensified Day Moisturiser SPF15 in the supermarket before heading into the mountains, and it was amazing. My skin was peachy soft the whole day & night. A total lifesaver for cold dry climates and a bargain to boot. Needless to say it turned my skin into an oil slick when I got back to the European summer, but I'm definitely keeping hold of it for the winter!

For body, I've never found anything that works better than smoothing on some baby oil in the shower, after I've turned off the water but before I've dried off. It seals in the moisture or something, I don't know, but my skin stays sooo soft all day long if I do this.

For face, I don't need a lot of extra moisture in the winter (it only gets down in the 40s or so here) but when I do I swear by DHC's Ceremide Quick. It's a liquid, kind of like a toner but without alcohol. I splash it on under my regular moisturizer and it really seems to add that little bit extra that I need when it's dry and windy.

I recently made a trip to my local Bath & Body Works and fell in love with their "simplicity" line of body butters... I purchased a pot of pumpkin body butter and a pot of cocoa body butter. Both smell AMAZING and moisturize like nothing else. It's an awesome way to get in the spirit of the season while taking great care of your skin. Tip: When I have flyaway bangs, rubbing a bit of the pumpkin butter in my palms and smoothing it over my hair works wonders!

Last winter I had a problem with dry itchy skin and my sister in law who is a nurse told me to use Eucerin. I picked up the Calming Cream and it really helped me get through the winter.

Right now I am in love with Curel's new Natural Healing Lotion in the Honey, Vanilla and Shea Butter. It smells wonderful and it keeps my skin soft all day.

I live in L.A. so it is ALWAYS dry...For normal days, I use Aveeno Natural 24 hour moisturizing body lotion in the vanilla scent. For extra dry skin days I use The Body Shop's body butter in Nut right when i get out of the shower. Dry skin is gone instantly!

For my face, I always use Philosophy's Make-up Optional kit, all the products. No more dry skin, no more zits, no more wrinkles! I love this set!

Also, my cuticles are super dry year round...I use Lush Lip Service on them before bed, then use my Aveeno lotion.

Sorry, correction for the above post...my lotion is not by Aveeno, it is by Curel. Not sure where I got Aveeno! The exact name is "Curel 24 Hour Natural Healing Moisturizing Lotion with Honey, Vanilla & Shea Butter Extracts." It's fab!

This sounds nuts, but i use Corn Husker's Lotion on my hands and feet i the winter. It doesn't smell very good (farmers really, really use it) but it does a great job...

My husband also uses Corn Huskers, Danielle. You are right in that it doesn't smell good.

you know, my sister has worked in healthcare and she also got into using the corn husker's lotion quite a bit because of how dry and damaged her hands would get from all the extra handwashing. she swore by it at the time. cheap and effective as a moisturizer, but yes there is no yummy scent there. ;)

my PERSONAL favorites are LUSH Smitten and the Fresh - Orange Chocolate Shea Butter I just reviewed as well as L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream all for the hands.

for overall body moisturizers, i love Korres Vanilla Cinnamon body milk for scent (to die for) but also VERY highly effective is Johnson's 24-hour softlotion and also Neutrogena Body Oil applied with a cotton ball after bath or shower.

it's SO hard to pick favorites when i am such a fan of all these pampering products, don't you think so too?

I have combination skin, but in the fall and winter my face used to get very dry, red and flaking. About a year ago I started using Kiehls Imperiale repairateur moisturizing masque.

Here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/djufk

It can be used as a 20 minute mask to drench your skin, but I usually put it on right before bed and keep it on all night. My skin looks great in the morning, and I feel like my makeup goes on much smoother and easier.

I also pat on Kiehls Creamy eye treatment with avocado at night.

It works wonders - I have no more under eye circles, even if I only get a few hours of sleep. It's too shiny looking to wear in the daytime though. Strictly for night time use.

I always thought that different skin products for night time were a waste of time and money, but these products really are worth it. The Kiehls products are expensive, but you only use a little bit and they last forever. I'm a HUGE fan of Kiehls. I use a lot of their products.

I use "Bag Balm" when I'm *SUPER* dry - it was made for cow udders. It's great on my hands.

For my face, I use Kiehl's Sodium PCA Oil Free Moisturizer - I have oily skin, and it's never caused a breakout.

I've got combination skin, too, and I find using a very light moisturising lotion all over my face and a slightly richer creme where I need it. At the moment I'm using Estee Lauder Daywear Plus Lotion and the Creme from the same range (I splurged and got the cleanser and toner, too) - my skin's nicer than it's been in a long time, even though I turned the central heating on this week!

And for the body, I second the baby oil before you're dry. It's the simplest and the most effective. The downside is having to wait ages before putting on clothes.

For dry skin, I like Korres Natural Products Guava Body Butter. For really dry skin, like shins, feet, elbows, cuticles..I like Fresh Orange Chocolate Shea Butter and Dessert's Sweet Butter, which can be used for both skin and hair. My friend who works at Sephora swears by it. For face, I like DDF's Ultra Light Oil Free Moisturizing Dew and if you need a really rich lotion for dry facial skin, there is nothing like Creme de la Mer. It is super expensive, so try going to the beauty counters at Saks or Neiman's and asking for samples. Use a safety pin to poke a tiny hole in the sample packet and the stuff lasts for weeks.
