DeLush Roundtable: What's Your Red?
They say every woman has a perfect shade of red lipstick. Is this true? Personally, I've always been a little afraid of red lipstick, but after I saw Uma Thurman in those Louis Vuitton ads, I've been inspired. So help me out here - tell me what shade of red YOU love. Maybe you can convince me that it isn't so scary, and maybe my lips CAN look as good as that Uma chick's.
Afraid of Red,
Melissa

Elizabeth Arden Lush Red. Best red ever.
Alas, the last time I found a red lipstick I looked good in was circa 1988. The sad thing is that I love red lipstick...I've just been unable to find a suitable replacement. I need a slightly subdued red with blue undertones.
Chanel, Shanghai Red. Absolutely fantastic, and so is the nail color.
I always go for dark orangey-reds as those tend to look better on me. I don't know if L'Oreal still makes it, but Cranapple is a nice shade. I'm still searching for my perfect red, though.
(PS: You two are entirely responsible for making me spend my extra money on MAC's holiday line. :D)
I've got really dark brown/espresso colored hair, hazel eyes, and very pale skin. I can't wear primary colors since they wash me out big time. But I love red lipstick, and the closest thing to red I've been able to find is Chanel's Ruby Slipper - while wearing this color and waiting at a bus stop downtown, I nearly caused a traffic accident! Now that's some good lipstick.
I have two reds: one WOW! the other more of a daily.
My daily red is MAC's lipstick in "O." It's red but with a golden shimmer to it. It's really gorgeous and doesn't make me look all faded.
My WOW! red is MAC's lipstick in "Rage." It's a lovely matte red, a true red, and when I wear it, it gives me the Vargas Pin-Up mouth. Delicious!
I wear MAC's Redwood as my red. It's a red, but it's not too bright. I am very pale, with naturally light blonde hair, so when I wear red it gets noticed. I don't wear it more than a few times per year, but I always love a red lip, with only charcoal eyeliner and mascara on the eyes- no shadow. It always looks glamorous and makes one feel fabulous.
okay, this is starting to look a little promising...i'm getting less nervous about it knowing some of you actually have reds that you have faith in. ;)
*and sorry, j, MAC has a hold on me, too!
I like MAC Russian Red best of all. It's not too bright (although I do have a Bourjois one that is very bright that I love) and it makes your teeth look whiter and your skin look radiant! I make all my friends try it, and so far, I've converted three of them.
My perfect red is MAC Fresh Moroccan. It's a neutral red with golden shimmer that is just gorgeous but doesn't scream "LIPS!" at you.
My virgin red lipstick, back when I was afraid of red, was Benefit It's Karma. Sadly, it's been discontinued. It was pretty darn awesome.
I like browner, brick reds. So far I'm set on Jane - Browned Down Red, it's cheap and good for my coloring during the day. At night I try DoWop - Belladonna, it's bright, almost cherry.
For a night out, Lancome JUICY WEAR Ultra-Lasting Full Colour and Shine Lip Duo in Candy Apple is perfect. It really does look like a candy apple: super shiny and patent leathery. And it LASTS!!! For daytime, Stila lip glaze in Strawberry or for a cheaper version Bonne Bell Lip D'Votion in Simply Strawberry. Both are sheer, lasting true red glosses that taste great.
I am all about deep, sheer burgundies, my favorite being Paula Dorf's Lipsicles in the color Miro. Paula knows how to formulate healthy lip colors that actually stay on your lips, too.
I, too, love DuWop Shades of Venom in Belladonna (I know somebody else mentioned it). It's sheer, pretty, and although the vividness(I don't know if that's a word) doesn't last all day, it leaves your lips looking like you just ate a cherry popsicle!
While it's not cheap at all, over at ThreeCustom.com, they can create cosmetics that have been discontinued from a small sample that you have left. So if your favourite red is no longer available and you still have a bit left, they can recreate it for you. Lovely!
Guerlain Rouge Gipsy No. 111. It doesn't have the greatest staying power, but when my uncle asked his friend who worked on the Pearl Harbor movie set how they made those great red lips, that's what he pointed him to.
I really like Mac Marrakesh. It's a deeper, almost brownish/orange red that is very striking, but not LOUD. And not pink-y at all...I can't do lots of reds b/c for some reason they turn pink on my lips.
My favorite all-time red is Dior Addict's Rouge Diapositive. I save it for special occasions, because it truly is a fire-engine red, but it's so glamourous that I really should take it out more often.
I have so many lipsticks/glosses that it's ridiculous. My favorite reds are:
MAC Redwood - this is my "stage" lipstick
MAC O - for a great, every day red
MAC Lipglass in Greed - shiny, glossy, more subdued red
Bobbi Brown Matte Lip Stain in Chili - pat it on with your finger and look like a pin-up girl!
DiorKiss in Candy Apple - smells sweet and leaves your lips looking luscious!
Clinique Butter Shine in Cranberry Cream. It helps me make friends when total strangers come up and ask me what my colour is.
