DeLush Love It or Lose It? The Spray-On Tan

tan.gifYou've seen it on celebrities. Some of you may have seen it on your friends. And others of you may even have gotten one yourself.

The question seems often to be the degree of color as well as the ability for it to look natural. So here's the question we put to you, Dear DeLush Readers: Do you say "Love It" or "Lose It" to the spray-on tan? If you have personal experience with getting one, please share it with us as well. Now, tell us what you think!

Lose it! I'm very fair skinned, and I don't see anything wrong with that. I have to use copious amounts of sunblock when I'm outside for extended periods of time, or I wind up looking more like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer than Pamela Anderson. Some of today's most celebrated women are fair-skinned, and I don't see Nicole Kidman, Debra Messing, or Kate Winslet sporting the day-glo orange look!

I, like Peyton, am a fair-skinned person who rarely if ever uses tanning products of any kind and I certainly don't tan. However, during the spring and summer I like a little color, and I am definitely more on-board with a "spray on" tan than with a suntan or bed tan. So I guess I "Love It?"

LOVE IT. I'm a redhead with fair, freckly skin. One coat of spray tan and I have that "just returned from a weekend away" look. For us redheads, that is a tough glow to get naturally. As long as you don't overdo it, spray tans can be great.

As a reformed “tan-orexic”, I turned to the spray-on tan years ago when it became apparent that my extremely fair skin was going to end up seriously damaged if I kept up bad habits. Since then, though, I’ve found (like other commenters) that there’s nothing wrong with being naturally pale. Some of the newer spray-ons look more natural than products of the past, but it’s still hard for me to a) apply it evenly, and b) deal with all of the exfoliation necessary to keep the “tan” from rubbing unnaturally off of my knees and elbows. I just don’t have that kind of time, especially when I’m often disappointed in (or horrified by) the results. I say “lose it”!

I got a spray-on tan once so I wouldn't look quite so pale for my company's formal holiday dinner/dance. Other than a few overly-pigmented areas at my wrists and knuckles, I thought the application looked pretty even.

Still, I say lose it. First, my coloring (pale skin, pink undertones, dark hair) just doesn't lend itself to a bronzed look at. all. Second, it's pretty expensive for something that doesn't last more than four or five days. Third, the actual process is a little complicated (they made me watch a 15-minute video before I could go in the booth!) and makes it easy to get it in your mouth. In the end, I think it's a lot easier to just take care of your skin with good nutrition, exercise, drinking enough water, and moisturizing adequately.

Love it - I'm a big fan! I've done Mystic tanning for the last year but recently I tried an airbrush tan and it is awesome!!! So much easier (if you don't mind standing naked in front of a complete stranger). There's no rubbing so your palms don't have the tell-tale orange color. I did it the day before my wedding and my white dress stayed totally white - no rub off!

Love it...when it's done right. If you want the sunkissed look, a fake bake is the way to go since there's no risk of skin cancer and no premature aging. Just beware of turning into an orange monster.
