We Review: Origins Eye Shadow

originseye.jpgMelissa Tried It: While I loved the sturdy little compact with big mirror inside, and the super-smooth texture, but unfortunately despite its claims to be crease-free and not "fizzle, flake or fade away", it consistently creased within an hour of application. I suppose a shadow base would help some, but if you aren't in the habit of using one, I'm sorry to say this won't be ideal. $14.00, at Origins.

Clarins Multi-Blush Cream Compact (in Apricot & Litchee)

clarinsmultiblush.jpgWhat They Say: The convenient make-up companion for busy women, Multi-Blush enhances the color of your cheeks, illuminates eyes and brightens lips with soft, subtle colour. Its unique texture combines the softness of a cream with the smoothness of an ultra-fine powder and melts into the skin for natural, long-lasting results. Apply Multi-Blush with your fingertips and create the colour effect and intensity you want. The result is subtle, natural, long-lasting make-up with a beautiful finish every time.

Jamie's Thoughts: I wanted so badly to love this product, but I just couldn't seem to make it happen. This is a mediocre offering from the usually-fabulous Clarins cosmetics line. My main beef is the suggested method of application: I hate using my fingers to apply blush. It spreads oils all over my combination skin, which leads to irritation and breakouts. That said...

As a blush...
Tough to apply, didn't go on smoothly (I felt like I was tugging at my face), stayed on for about 4-5 hours, color was true to description in that it was luminous but not shiny

As an eyeshadow...
I found the colors too close to skin tone for my complexion - anyone who can rock a peach or pink eye would love this. The product just isn't very smooth (again, with the tugging!).

As a lippie...
It's very matte - no shimmer whatsoever, so take that into account when considering a purchase. Staying power was almost nonexistent. Does not combine well with other lip products.

The Litchee color (a light, mauvey pink) was fairly versatile, and would be a great choice for anyone with a cooler complexion. The Apricot is quite peachy, and looks almost orange in some light. Overall, I'm moderately disappointed.

Just for Redheads Dream Eye Flavors

just4rh.jpgWhat They Say: "The secret of captivation revealed to every redhead desiring super-luminous, breathtaking eyes. Three breakthrough crème shades that are creaseless, waterproof, and won't budge or disappear."

Jamie's Thoughts: I have to be honest with you on this one. This eyeshadow is awesome. It doesn't budge, it doesn't look trashy when you layer it heavily, heck - it even comes off easily with makeup remover. I cannot recommend this enough, and as a redhead, I'm confident in saying that ANYONE could wear these earthy shades.

I tested soufflé, a slightly metallic brown with just a hint of gold. Not only did it make a super sexy smoky eye (I only do smoky eyes in brown, I'm too pale for all that charcoal), but it looked lovely in the light of day - one layer was enough to add a light, discreet shimmer to my lids, more than appropriate for the workplace (and it stays in place all day).

And, there's more! It functions much like a smudge pot by you-know-who, if you get a wet, angled brush and use it as eyeliner. I heartily recommend this to all pale gals out there (ginger hair, or not) and also advocate this line of shadows to any other curious parties. You will not be disappointed.

CHANEL Spring 2008 Eyeshadow Quad

CHANEL Bleu Célestes

What They Say: "Best-selling LES 4 OMBRES Quadra Eye Shadow in new Bleu Célestes, a palette of navy and pale tones. Wet/dry formula delivers day-to-evening looks. Apply dry for subtle shadowing. Slightly moistened applicator gives a more intense shade. Organic polymer derivatives ensure smudge-proof long wear, particularly in high temperature or humidity. "

Jen's Experience: I have tried several of the CHANEL eyeshadow quads, some of which are staples of my cosmetic wardrobe, some don't work quite as well with my skin tone. I took one look at the Bleu Célestes quad and thought it would be way too gaudy for regular use with its one very bold navy shade, two lighter, brighter blues and a pink.

I used the lightest blue as a base for the entire lid area, not going too heavy so that it's little more like a frosted white. I use a tiny bit of the pink as a highlighter on the underside of my eyebrow. For work, the medium blue works in my crease, with the navy blue wetted and used as an eyeliner. It translates well into evening by using the navy on my entire lower lid. I am not sure if it would have the same effect for all eyecolors, but I have to say, the more of the navy I use, the more my blue eyes pop.

I don't know if Chanel recently changed their formula or if this selection is just very pigment-rich, but I don't think I've ever seen eyeshadow last this long. I do use an eyeshadow base, but I am still impressed that I can go out with the navy shadow and come back in the wee hours with it looking just like when I applied it. Between the wear and the way these colors look with my skin, this compact is a surprise favorite of this Spring collection from Chanel.

M·A·C N Collection Eye Shadow & Nail Lacquer Shades

What They Say: "Seductive and ripe for scandal. A colour collection daringly stripped-down, voluptuously finished, with everything you could possibly need to play up the nakedness of your look. Think of it as naked - with coverage."

ncollectionshadow.jpg(about the shadows): "Highly-pigmented powder. Applies evenly, blends well."

(about the lacquers): "Revolutionary new high gloss formula. Three long-wearing finishes - Cream, Sheer, and Frosted. Visibly different. Provides no-streak/no-chip finish. Contains conditioners and UV protection. Go hi-lacquer!"

Melissa Says:
(about the shadows): As usual, M·A·C's shadows are beautiful and long-wearing. Now, here is also a collection that would look gorgeous on practically any woman. They're so neutral and have just a hint of sheen (Rich Flesh is more matte), that they provide amazing all-purpose looks from the deeper brown to the perfect brow highlight.

ncollectionlacquer.jpg(about the lacquers): I've reviewed these lacquers before as well, and though they tend to wear off the tips of my nails pretty quickly without a nice topcoat, these shades are very nice for this current nude trend. My favorite shade right now is Naturally Rich, but I can see myself falling more in love with the two lighter shades as the days grow warmer and my skin gets a little less pale! All are fairly sheer.

M·A·C N Collection Paint Pots and Tinted Lip Glass

"Seductive and ripe for scandal. A colour collection daringly stripped-down, voluptuously finished, with everything you could possibly need to play up the nakedness of your look. Think of it as naked - with coverage."

mac_nlipglass.jpg

About the Lip Glass: "A unique lip gloss available in a wide variety of colours that can create a high gloss, glass-like finish or a subtle sheen. Designed to be worn on its own, over Lip Pencil or Lipstick, Tinted Lipglass is the perfect product for creating shine that lasts. It's pigmented, very shiny and can impart subtle or dramatic colour. It contains Jojoba Oil to help soften and condition the lips. Tinted Lipglass is packaged in a convenient bottle with a sponge tip applicator that provides a quick, smooth, even application."

mac_npaintpot.jpg

About the Paint Pots: "A highly pigmented eye colour that goes on creamy but dries to an intense, vibrant finish. The next generation of a popular M·A·C formula, Paint Pots maintains all the intense traits of its inspiration. Long-wearing, colourfast. Creates seamless coverage without weight or caking. Blends smoothly over the lids. Cream-based, can be mixed with M·A·C shadows and liners. Available in matte and pearl formulas. "

Jen's Experience: We've reviewed both of these products before, so it should be no surprise that we love them. What is new are the fabulous N Collection's perfect range of nude shades. For the paint pots, I tested the Soft Ochre and Quite Natural shades, which are subtle and great for work. Not only do they last all day and into the evening, but they also are blendable and buildable to give just the right level of color to even out the skin tone on my lids. I tested all four Lip Glass shades from 1N to 4N and I find myself reaching for them now reflexively in the morning. They just work with every look. If I am going for a very nude look and I want to minimize the lips completely, I wear 1N or 2N over the N Collection Lipstick in 1N. On the other hand, 3N and 4N both look pretty even worn alone and have just enough pink to work with my fair skin. I am mightily impressed with this collection, and I feel like these are colors every woman should have in their make-up drawer.

CHANEL Holiday 2007: Blush of Youth and Quadra Four Eyeshadow

chanel_blush.jpg

About the blush: "Soft, light pressed powder sweeps on a sheer, luminous glow without ever streaking. Quilted surface inspired by the newest CHANEL handbag is unarguably chic. Nylon powder provides easy glide and long wear. Photo-reflective pigments help reduce the appearance of fine lines. "

Jen's Experience: This is my first experience with Chanel blush, and I am definitely pleased with what I've seen. The Holiday 2007 shade, Neroli Rose is a very light pink with blue undertones and a fair amount of sparkle. On my skin, I needed a fair amount of blush to give significant color, but on a friend who is even fairer-skinned than I am, it looks absolutely gorgeous. For those with cooler skin tone and very pale skin, I highly recommend this shade. And since the texture and wear is so nice on this blush, I am eager to try other shades on my own skin tone.

Retail Price: $40.00 (Chanel.com or your local Chanel counter)

chanel_radiantgems.jpg

About the eyeshadow: "Shade combinations ranging from matte to frost to satin for multiple looks, contrasting or complementary. Apply dry for subtle shadowing. Slightly moistened applicator gives a more intense shade. Organic polymer derivatives ensure smudge-proof long wear, particularly in high temperature or humidity."

Jen's Experience: I have tested the Chanel eyeshadow quads with great results in the past, and this one is no exception. The color collection for the Radiant Gems quad, though, is an absolute standout. The quad contains a white and silver, certainly perfect for evening, but great for day as well at low concentration. The other two shades are pinks that coordinate perfectly as accents with the white and silver. If you're looking for a fun gift for a fan of CHANEL cosmetics, this is definitely my pick.

M•A•C Holiday 2007: Royal Assets Collection

mac_royalassets.jpg

What They Say: "Stately in look, fabulously collectible: our gilded antique-inspired compacts for lips and eyes. With their magnificent assortment of shades and distinctly royal colour waves, who wouldn't regard these as an asset?"

Jen's Experience: The packaging for the Royal Assets collection is absolutely gorgeous. These are not palettes to leave hidden away in your bathroom drawers -- they need to be out on display. And as far as gifts go, these palettes are sure to be appreciated by any of the cosmetic lovers in your life.

The eyeshadow palettes each contain 6 fabulous colors. I tried the warm and cool palettes, but they're also available in smoky and metallics. My favorite of the one I tested is the cool palette. The six colors can be mixed and matched for various effects, and whatever the combination, I never fail to get compliments when I'm wearing these shades. Besides the previously mentioned luxe packaging, I am also impressed that they contain a real (although miniature) eyeshadow brush inside, rather than a cheap, throwaway applicator.

The lip palettes are also available in several combinations: Tan, Coral, Red and Pink, as well as one in the Viva Glam collection. I tried three of the palettes, which each contain three shades in the color range. Like the eyeshadow palettes, they contain a miniaturized version of the real brush, rather than requiring you to apply with your finger. I had a difficult time getting deep colors out of these palettes, but they have great staying power and a nice shine.

Jen's Experience: This gift set from Tarte contains four great Tarte products in a tiny, purse friendly cosmetics bag. The Inside Out lip gloss has long been one of my absolute favorite glosses, and the new color in this set is one of the prettiest yet. The mascara, while it doesn't have the staying power of some of my others, applies without clumping and really creates so nice volume and curling action.

The creaseless eyeshadow was a definite surprise in the pack. The duo contains two colors: one in a slate color, the other in more of a bronze. The slate color is a cream eyeshadow that applies so smoothly and with such rich color, you'd think it would have to crease. (It doesn't.) The bronze has a rollerball applicator, and while the color isn't as rich as the other, it's very pretty and like the slate, it doesn't crease. Both shades were really long-lasting and didn't smudge throughout the day.

I am not as sure about how well the face primer works. I have used it several times underneath my foundation, and while I think the foundation applies more evenly, I don't really find that it's particularly moisturizing or soothing.

M·A·C Holiday 2007: Curiositease Collection

maccosmetics_curiositease.jpg

"In the majestic fashion of our holiday Antiquitease collection yet with a style and realm of its own. Handsome in their bearing, these mini colour sets come in a textured cream paper cylinder with gold or silver crown motifs. Inside, all your M·A·C favourites."

Jen's Thoughts:

curiositease_lipglass.jpg
5 LipGlass and LusterGlass

Five gorgeous glosses presented beautifully? A great gift for any of the girls on your list! Choose warm or cool shades depending on the coloriing of the recipient. I found that even the warm shades looked great with my skin tone. The LusterGlass shades contain a bit more sparkle than the LipGlass shades, which makes them oh-so-perfect for the holiday season.

curiositease_pigment.jpg

5 Pigments and Glitter
I'm a huge fan of the pigments, so it's lovely to see a collection of 5 pretty holiday shades presented here as a gift. Like the glosses, these are available in both warm and cool shades. I tried the warm shades, which are probably a little too much for my skin tone, so keep that in mind when you're making your purchase. I'm less of a fan of the glitter (it's very messy), but I do see some potential wears in all the holiday parties on my calendar.

curiositease_eyeliner.jpg
5 Softsparkle Eye Pencils
This collection may have less gift-giving potential, but it sure is fun to wear! The collection contains 5 pencils in black and 4 colors with just a touch of sparkle. The sparkly black is dramatic for evening but isn't so much that it can't be worn to work. The colors require a little more bravery, but I found that they really brighten the eyes. One thing to note: the pencils pull a little right out of the packaging, but softened nicely with a few sharpenings.

Review: M•A•C Matte²

mac-matte2.jpgWhat They Say: "Our new Eye Shadow. Silky-smooth, non-creasing. The sum of its parts: Matte x Matte = Matte². Factor in five shades of Liquidlast Liner, and the result of this rich colour x high opacity equation isn't only matte squared - it's beautiful."

What Melissa Says: This shadow is incredibly smooth and feels fabulous going on. Not only is the color amazing (not all shades are so bright - check out the other colors here), but the wear truly is beautiful and lasts all day without losing intensity. I actually did have some slight creasing after several hours, but other than that, these pretty pops of matte color are a great addition to your shadow options.

Fall Color Product Review: M•A•C Blue Storm Eyeshadows

macbluestorm.jpgWhat They Say: "On Fall's horizon, a storm of hues: stratus blues, overcast greys...a thunderclap of shades so intense, your eye becomes the heart of the storm. Highly-pigmented powder. Applies evenly, blends well."

Melissa Says: Are you getting the hint that a touch of blue (the new blues, they are WEARABLE!) is very hot for this season? Well, these shadows from M•A•C give you even more pretty options with these pots filled with varied shades of blue, teal, frosty grey, black with blue pearl and blue laced with pretty purple sheen that allow you to choose a shade that follows this trend which looks flattering on you and that you feel comfortable with (I know some of you still resist the blue idea...yes, you there, I see you). They also blend beautifully together and last fairly well, but do crease a bit after several hours.

M·A·C Flashtronic Mineralize Eyeshadows and SkinFinish

mac_mineralize_eyeshadow.jpg

About the Mineralize Eyeshadows: "A sheer, pearled, mineralized powder Eye Shadow with up to four shades baked together in one pan. Superfine, lightweight: provides a softly tinted, reflective shimmer on the skin with a delicate sense of dimension. Subtly builds colour and shine. Can be worn on face, eyes or body. "

Jen's Experience: I've seen so many gorgeous, lush colors on the shelves this fall, but honestly, these aren't something I would have fallen in love with at first site. However, after using them these past few weeks, I found them very easy to use despite the swirling, bright, pearlescent colors. Each of the shades apply evenly and build to produce shades that range from the subtle to the statement-making. My favorite shades of the collection are Techtonic, a gorgeous bright green, and By Jupiter, a brown that sparkles with at least half my wardrobe.

Retail Price: $16.50 (MACCosmetics.com or your local department store counter)

mac_mineralize_skinfinish.jpg

About the SkinFinish: "A luxurious velvet-soft powder with high-frost metallic finish. Smoothes on: adds buffed-up highlights to cheeks and brows, or an overall ultra-deluxe polish to the face."

Jen's Experience: The Mineralize SkinFinish has a similar swirling, pearlescent quality, although in much more subtle shades to make it suitable for a powder or bronzer. For my pale skin, the Northern Lights shade was the perfect highlighter to really make my skin glow. Another shade, Gold Spill (shown), worked as a light bronzer, and could also be built up for a little sculpting effect. While those shades made a great powder finish, the final shade, Global Glow, was quite a bit too dark for my light skin, but I'm sure it would work similarly to the others in the collection for those with darker skin tones. Both of these products are available for a limited time, so be sure to hit the counter this weekend if you want to pick up items from this collection.

Fall Product Review: M•A•C Smoke Signals Eyeshadow x4 Palettes & Liners

What They Say: "Her smoke signals: intense blue, grey and aubergine shadows wafted over the eyes, bound by rings of creamy Eye Kohl..."

macsmokequads.jpgGentle Fume Eyes: Eye Shadow x4 - "A monochromatic quad of four modern cool-toned Eye Shadows in the sultry spirit of Smoke Signals. Features three limited edition shades: Waft, Gentle Fume and Rondelle, matched-up with Carbon. Texturally: an intense mix of matte and velvet."

Smoking Eyes: Eye Shadow x4 - "A smoking quad of four warmed-over neutrals that at its deepest starts with a rich, dark black. Features three limited edition shades: Next to Nothing, Smoking, and Showstopper, complemented by Satin Taupe."

macsmokekohl.jpgKohl Power Eye Pencil (in Orpheus, a gold-flecked black and Raven, an intense black with red pearl that looks sort of like deep plum on the eye) - "A kohl pencil that has all the intensity and colour power of ultra-soft carbon. Specially formulated to provide deep, fully opaque coverage, provides an intense, smoked finish with duo-chrome pearl. Versatile in application: blend or smudge."

Melissa Says:
about the Eye Shadow x4 - These quad shades are really well put together in terms of compatibility with each other. My personal favorite is the Smoking Eyes set, but both include very pretty and of-the-moment colors that don't go over the top, but are in fact quite wearable. This was my first introduction to wearing M•A•C quad shadows, and I have been impressed. The pigments are always true and the formula is quite smooth, with pretty respectable staying power.

about the Kohl Power Eye Pencils - I also had not previously worn M•A•C's Kohl Power Eye Pencils, and honestly I always associate kohl liners with lots of smudging. While I found that these created a gorgeous line on my upper lids and remained unsmudged much longer than with other kohl liners I've tried in the past (several hours), on my usually more moisturized lower lids they did not fare so well. Obviously I typically wouldn't line both upper and lower with a bold pencil like this anyway, but I wanted to try it out for the sake of getting a feel for all aspects of wear. On upper lids, these two shades create a little extra drama and sexiness, but use caution when considering using them underneath.

Chanel Fall Collection 2007 Eyeshadow Quadra in Sequoia and Hydrabase Lipstick in Magnolia Rose (Limited Edition)

chanel_hydrabase.jpg
About the lipstick: "Satin cream lipstick. Long-lasting colour wears for hours.

Moisturizing formula imparts broad range of fashion-forward colours with long-lasting satiny finish and medium coverage.

Vitamin E and chamomile protect and soothe lips. Soft, creamy formula won't fade, smudge or feather.
Apply to bare lips, after outlining with Aqua Crayon or Precision Lip Definer. To make lipstick last even longer, powder lips before application. "

Jen's Experience: This lipstick in Magnolia Rose is the coordinating lipstick for both the Garden Party eyeshadow quad and the other eyeshaow quad in their fall collection, Sequoia, reviewed below. I love the fabulous lipstick shades in Chanel's collection this fall, but I can't help but think this shade would be better if it weren't frosted. I have been seeing frosted lipsticks all over the place this season, so I guess that's the trend, but I can't help but feel like I'm back in middle school when I'm wearing one. That said, the rose shade looks good with my skin tone and coordinates perfectly with the other pieces in this collection or with the bolder eye looks for the season. The wear of this lipstick is not quite as good as I would like; it lasts 1-2 hours before it needs a touch up.

Retail Price: $25.00 (Chanel.com or your local department store counter)

sequoia.jpgAbout the Eyeshadow Quad:
"Four eye shadows in one compact. Coordinated quartet of shades in wet/dry formula.

Shade combinations ranging from matte to frost to satin for multiple looks, contrasting or complementary. Apply dry for subtle shadowing. Slightly moistened applicator gives a more intense shade.

Organic polymer derivatives ensure smudge-proof long wear, particularly in high temperature or humidity. Dermatologist tested. Ophthalmologist tested. Safe for contact lens wearers.
For a soft, natural look, use a single shade with graduated intensity. For a more sophisticated look, apply lighter shade from lashes to brow, medium shade on the lid, medium-dark shade in the crease and deepest shade to outer corner of lid."

Jen's Experience: I have much less of a problem with frosted eyeshadows than I do with frosted lipsticks. This palette contains four pink to neutral shades, two matte, two frosted, which in combinaton make up one of the most wearable palettes I've tried this whole season. Much like the Garden Party shadows, these don't necessarily seem like something I would have normally chosen for fall. But with colors this wearable? Pick it up now and stash it for Spring!

Review: Giorgio Armani Eye Mania Palette from Fall 2007 Leather Collection

giorgioeyemania.jpgWhat They Say: "Drawing inspiration from Armani's exquisite collection of leather accessories, the eye mania palette features four versatile shades encased in a luxurious black snakeskin print compact. This elegant eye shadow palette is an accessory all on its own; a unique expression of the Armani style. The collection of pink and violet hues in matte, satin, and shimmering finishes creates a sophisticated look for Fall 2007. Limited Edition.

Eye Shadow Shades:
satin pink beige
soft shimmering pink
matte deep purple
matte ashwood

Application Techniques:
Apply matte ashwood all over your eyelid, blending matte deep purple into your crease and soft shimmering pink above the crease. Finish by adding satin pink beige into the inner corners of your eye."

Melissa Says: It was as if this palette was created just to make me happy. The colors just happen to contain the shades that look best with my eye color, and they apply more smoothly than any shadow I've used. Not only does this shadow blend beautifully, but there is not a crease to be found after wearing it for hours. True, this is more than most of us are typically prepared to spend for shadow on a regular basis, but the luxury of the formula combined with the beautiful shades and pretty compact make this a splurge that's worth it if you're looking to spoil yourself. If this selection of colors doesn't work as well for your coloring, I would still highly recommend one of the other versions of Eye Mania palletes.

Fall Product Review: M.A.C. RushMetal Collection (Limited Edition)

mac_rushmetal.jpg
The alchemy of gold transformed and the manipulated by M.A.C. artistry into the next wave. Use to create a subtle wash of colour or an intense effect. Pigment does not streak or cake, is easy to blend and long-lasting."

Jen's Experience: For the most part, I haven't had good luck with loose eyeshadow, especially when it shimmers. No matter how careful I am with the brush, even applied with a little water, if it doesn't end up making my entire face sparkly during application, it ends up that way by the end of the evening. Well, this eyeshadow from M.A.C. completely exceeded all my expectations. Not only are the colors vivid but wearable, they apply so evenly and last an incredibly long time. I most commonly reach for Quick Frost, a creamy white with a soft green pearl, and Revved-up, an icy rose. But the more metallic shades -- Rushmetal, Gold Mode, Mauvement, Off the Radar, Copperized, and Cocomotion -- are also fun and not out of place even for work.

If you purchase these, be sure to invest in at least one of the M.A.C. shader brushes. I used #239 for detail work and #249 for the overall area. These brushes do an excellent job of holding the pigment so that it's delivered to the eye, rather than all over your face (and the bathroom counter). These pigments and the brushes are a combination that is truly the star of this collection.

Lipstick

What They Say: "Colour plus texture for the lips. Stands out on the runway. Simmers on the street! What made M·A·C famous. "

Jen's Experience: The lipstick colors in this collection are all fantastic, from rose-tinged coffee shades to a light gold shade. All of the colors have a bit of gold in them, but not so much that it looks to overdone for everyday use. Since the eyeshadows can be pretty intense when they're layered, it's nice to have such pretty shades that aren't too overwhelming. My favorite of the bunch is Fast Lane, the mauve with silver pearl lustre, which is perfect with my favorite Pigment shades, but also works well with charcoals. The other colors (Thrills, Frenzy, and Soft Lust) are more brown and gold and are a little out of my comfort zone, but it turns out they look great with a dewy foundation and a oood bronzer. Believe it or not, this is my first experience with M.A.C. lipstick, and while I like the shades, I am not as excited about the wear. I got one to two hours tops out of each. Still, I like them well enough to recommend picking up one of these coordinating shades when you're looking for the RushMetal Eyeshadow Pigments.

Fall Product Review: M•A•C Painterly Paint Pots

macpainterlypots.jpgWhat They Say: "A highly pigmented eye colour that goes on creamy but dries to an intense, vibrant finish. Available in matte and pearl formulas."

Melissa Says: I swear, I want to get one of these for every woman I know. First of all, the pots have a very substantial amount of the product in them, enough to last months, and what's inside can only be described as FANTASTIC. Very creamy and soft, these colors go on beautifully and stay on beautifully. This stuff glides on silky-smooth and you can layer it to your preference of intensity. With some slightly bold shades as well as several very usable neutral ones, there's a good chance you could find at least one that you could get an awful lot of use out of. Right now I love using the beige- and rose-hued shades as bases for the entire lid, with the frost finish of Bare Study typically for highlighting, and then choosing my main lid shade. I've also used a liner brush on a few of these to create gorgeous, lasting eyeliner in interesting shades that lasts impressively well throughout the day without fading.

Love. This. Stuff.

Review: CHANEL Silky Eye Shadow Duo in Fall 2007 shade Lotus-Cactus

chanellotuscact.jpgWhat They Say: "Autumn gardens inspire the season's sumptuous, sophisticated look - told in deeply sensuous earth tones that lend lips and eyes rich new emphasis. Silky powder shadow pairs in runway shades provide crease-free, long-lasting wear. New Lotus-Cactus couples a shade of soft pink with a precious emerald green."

What Lisa Says: This pale pink and khaki green duo is choc with shimmer and should be beautiful with the falling offerings coming off the runway this year. My Lotus however is more than half gone compared to the Cactus. Lotus is great for highlighting the brow and inner eye areas. It has just the right amount of color and shine. If you like just a simple wash of color try the Cactus. But if it's depth of color you're looking for, you'll find you'll use much more Lotus than Cactus in this duo. I just could not get the Cactus dark enough for my liking. Even using a mixing medium and applying it wet did not add depth of color but did add sheen. A nice effect but not much darker than applying dry. As is so common with duo's and quad's, I'm liking one better than the other. Still, it's a nice duo, it stayed on without creasing and I'll wear both during the day but would not recommend for evening. Chanel always packages their products nicely with two applicators and a mirrored compact.

Chanel Fall Collection 2007 Eyeshadow Quadra in Garden Party (Limited Edition)

chanel_fall2007.jpgWhat They Say: "Shade combinations ranging from matte to frost to satin for multiple looks, contrasting or complementary. Apply dry for subtle shadowing. Slightly moistened applicator gives a more intense shade. Organic polymer derivatives ensure smudge-proof long wear, particularly in high temperature or humidity. Dermatologist tested."

Jen's Experience: I have gotten so much wear out of last Fall's Chanel limited edition eyeshadow in Pink Lame, I was very eager to try out this season's palette, which seems to have some similar tones. I am not normally one to wear a lot of green eyeshadows, which are prevalent in this particular Quadra, but combined with the other pink and coral shades, I found it to be a completely wearable collection for my fair skin and hair. The pale green shade is a fun alternate to the usual pearl or cream shades that I wear on my browbone.

As for wear, I wasn't particularly impressed with the staying power of the eyeshadow when worn without an eyesahdow base, although I've always had trouble getting eyeshadow to stay put throughout the day. One thing I did note is that this eyeshadow doesn't smudge at all, even when I rub my eyes, which to me is a huge plus. I think this is due in part to the feather-soft texture that really allows it to melt into my skin.

Overall, this collection is a pretty way to brighten up all those dark clothes that come out for fall, and for those who are pale like I am, I think you'll find that the colors in the palette will liven up your look for the season.

Fall Product Review: Jemma Kidd Eye Wardrobe

jemmakidd_eyewardrobe.jpg
What They Say: " Stunningly wearable shades in one color family for everything you need to highlight and shade, day to night. Intense, blendable color that lasts.

How to use:
Step 1: Always start with a base of highlight.
Step 2: Load highlight brush and apply over the whole eye area, blending up and out to the brow bone and outer corner.
Step 3: Load color brush with a mid color, flicking away excess.
Step 4: Apply color at the lash line and then blend up and out over the lid. Blend up to the socket, but never apply color at the socket because you will then have to blend it too far beyond that point.
Step 5: If you need more color, apply again at the base and blend upwards. Layer color until satisfied with the intensity.
Step 6: If you want to, you can sweep an extra layer of highlight under the brow to accentuate the look. "

Jen's Experience: This is my first review for the fall season, and hopefully it's an indicator of things to come! The eye wardobe I tested contained various shades of gray, from the nearly white to a smoky black, with a medium gray and a shimmery one as well. I love the off-white shade as an allover base and a highlighter for the brow bone. My surprise favorite of the bunch, though, was the dark, shimmery smoke color. It works well on my lids for evening use, but it also makes a fantastic eyeliner with a drop of water. The wear is impressive, lasting for hours and hours without even a eyeshadow base This is definitely going to be my prime shadow wardrobe for all my black ensembles for fall.

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Bronzer, Blush and Eyeshadow

physicianformshimmerstrip.jpgWhat They Say: "Shimmer all year long with this glowing powder which highlights skin with five luminous bands of warm beige, sand and bronze. All shades blend together for the ultimate glamorous, tan glow. Use all over face as a bronzer, sweep over cheeks as a blush or use each individual shade as an eye shadow. Silky smooth texture for a radiant complexion."

Alissa's Opinion: I tried this out in Sunset Strip (bronzer) and Malibu Strip (pink sand bronzer). I really loved the "custom" part of this bronzer. The lightest shades can be used to highlight and the darker ones are great for contouring. When mixed together on a big brush, the effect is a great tanned glow. The pink tones in Malibu Strip really brought out the blue in my eyes when I applied it on my lids and Sunset Strip was great for both face and décolletage. The texture was smooth and the amount of shimmer was just right. You really can't go wrong at this price.

Review: Prestige Cosmetics Eyeshadows

prestige_cosmetics.jpgWhat They Say: "Prestige Eye Shadows are versatile, long-lasting and come in beautiful, trendy shades."

Jen's Experience: I am a huge fan of Prestige Cosmetics. They make some of my favorite eyecolors, both in eyeliner and eyeshadows. On this round, I tested some of their new shades for summer, Love (pictured above), Champagne, and Indigo. The Champagne color is very similar to one I tested previously, and is a great color to use as a base to other shades or alone to brighten up the eye area. The other two shades are, well, a little bright for me. I know that brights are supposed to be in this year and all, but I found them hard to wear without looking like Mimi from "The Drew Carey Show". Still like the punch of the bright shades? If you're prone to looking overdone, try wearing the color only on the crease of the eye, and be sure to limit the use of blush and lipstick in conjunction with the colors. If you're looking for something with a little less brightness, these come in many, many more shades. They're not the longest lasting eyecolors that I've used, but for the price, I love to stock up to broaden my color selection.

Review: Estee Lauder Eyeshadows in 'Bronzed Goddess' and 'Gilded Goddess'

esteelauder_shadow.gifWhat They Say: "Multi colors. Multi finishes. Major impact. Brilliant colors, silky formula looks richer, wears longer, without creasing. Sleek, modern compact includes applicator and mirror. Make a statement with one dramatic shade, lash to brow. Or play with all the colors and matte to high pearl finishes. Now see your eyes take on a new brilliance. Fragrance free. Ophthalmologist-tested."

Jen's Experience: I've tested Estee Lauder's shades in the past with good results. I love the silky soft texture, and it's nice to have eyeshadows that actually last. The shades for the Bronze Goddess collection are gorgeous: 'Gilded Goddess' is a light gold that makes a nice base for any shade, and 'Bronze Goddess', the signature color, is darker and is a good contrast color to wear in the crease. (I've also been using it a bit on my eyebrows.) If you liked the shades from the Holiday Collection 2006 and didn't manage to pick them up before they were sold out, you'll be happy to know that these colors are very similar. The colors looked good with my pale skintone, particularly along with the Bronze Goddess bronzer, but I think they would be a better fit with warmer skin tones.

Review: ColorSurge Eyeshadow Trio in “Doe-Eyed”

clinique_freshbloomshadow.jpgWhat They Say: "Creamy, intense shadows build quickly, blend easily to a wash of long-lasting colour. Three coordinating shades for a wardrobe of possibilities—each can be worn alone, as pairs, or layered together. Sleek, transparent-bottom case makes it easy to select shades. Ophthalmologist tested."

Jamie’s Thoughts: This trio is an instant classic – a super soft pink, a muted chocolate brown, and a light brown with grey tones. The light brown also has a VERY subtle bit of sparkle – so subtle, in fact, that I didn’t notice it at first.

I realize my purpose here is to explain to you what amazing things this product does for my eyes, but alas, I have no words. Allow me to describe it a different way: the first time I wore it, I loved my face so much that I did a victory dance to Scissor Sisters’ “Ooh” all over my apartment. The whole song, I’m not kidding. It was a first.

I used pink all over the lid, the dark brown in the crease, and the light brown as a highlighting sweep over the more dramatic dark brown. It makes my eyes look youthful (but not overly trendy), polished, and appropriate for a day at the office, or a date on Saturday night. The compact has a mirror, and the application tool is sponge-tipped on one end, and has a soft brush on the other end. The consistency of each shadow is smooth, soft, and easy to blend (or deepen with repeated use of the same color). When I’m in a hurry, I just sweep some of the pink on, and I look instantly polished and alert.

This is a must-have for spring – for any age, any style, and anyone who wants to look naturally beautiful, but not overly made up. I highly recommend this product for redheads, especially.

Retail Price: $21.50 (Check your local Clinique counter. Their website is, sadly, sold out.)

Review: Vasanti Tinseltown Eye Palette

vasantitinseltown.jpgWhat They Say: "Vasanti's latest eye colour palette uses distinctive reflex sparkles that provide a super brilliant reflection of dazzling shimmer. 5 gorgeous colour-rich shades that can be used as eyeshadows or eyeliners. Mix & match and have some fun!"

Toya’s Take: In my earlier review of Vasanti products, I let you know how much I love this new make-up brand. The eyeshadow palette did not disappoint. What’s so great is that the colors look on your face like they look in the palette – the colors are very “true” and saturated. Know that there are no matte shades in this palette – this palette is for the woman who wants brilliant color with some sparkle and shimmer. I have used it to create a smoky green eye and a smoky blue eye, suitable for evenings. I also have used it as stage-worthy make-up to great success. Vasanti is well worth the money.

Review: TINte Shimmering Face Pearls

tintegoldenlava.jpg
What They Say: "Our pearls offer intense, radiant color for a variety of captivating looks. Wear them wet for a more dramatic look, or dry for a soft shimmering glow. They can take your look from subtle and barely there to shimmering knockout glam! TINte's pearls can be used as an eyeshadow, eyeliner, highlighter, blush and bronzer or underneath your favorite TINte lip gloss. There are no limits on the way to use them."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I wasn't surprised that this looked amazing as a shadow, both wet and dry. It's incredibly fine and very smooth. What I didn't expect was how subtly it highlighted my cheekbones when smoothed on lightly with my fingertip or how pretty it looked under clear lipgloss as a sheer wash of color. (Of course, there are a few shades you wouldn't want to use on your lips!) Keep in mind that used this way, you may find it less long-wearing than some lip colors. I'm sure this can vary depending on the type of gloss you use. On eyes it wears fairly well, but isn't completely crease-resistant.

Double Review: Vasanti Products

Vasanti recently sent products labeled for us (Melissa and Toya); they'd even taken time to try to make sure we got the best colors for our skin tone! (Melissa) "This was the first time I'd ever heard of or tried anything from the Vasanti product line, and overall I was quite impressed."
(Toya) "I am really pleased with Vasanti Cosmetics, which I’d never even heard of until I received my package from DeLush. I couldn’t find much information on the company, but it’s clear that they strive to fit the needs of every woman, of every skin tone."

All of the following products can be purchased at vasanticosmetics.com. Read on for our individual product reviews.

vasanticoverup.jpgVasanti Liquid Cover-Up:
What They Say: "Liquid concealer and foundation in one. Cover only where you want, it blends into the skin without a trace. Gives the skin incredible radiance and feels like you have nothing on at all.

This multi purpose cover-up is an incredible under eye concealer, colour corrector, eye brightener and all over foundation.. It looks so natural on, no one will know you have it on but you.

The formulations work on all skin types and skin tones. It's oil-free and contains active ingredients to hydrate and brighten the skin. The shade range was developed to compliment any skin tone - from the fairest to the deepest."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: While this may not be powerful enough to cover up really prevalent dark circles (it's medium-coverage at best), it does blend away redness (blotchiness or little blemishes) and some darkness under the eyes. I thought it was really smooth and light with very little line-settling (a big plus).

Toya's Take: The Liquid Cover Up comes in a large tube, which I like. It blends nicely, but although the cover up was the same shade as the foundation I tested, it showed up as a bit dark and muddy, so I wasn’t completely happy.

Retail Price: $22.00

DeLush Ratings:

vasantifacebase.jpgVasanti Face Base:
What They Say: "Shades created specifically for yellow based skin tones.

• Gives you a natural finish of a pressed powder with coverage of a foundation
• Glides on easily and blends right into your skin
• Colors that match your skin tone and add a radiant glow
• Light weight, oil-free and oil absorbing
• Moisturizing
• Non-comodogenic (won't clog your pores)

Comes in a sleek platinum compact with a full face mirror and a sponge for a smooth application."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I get a little nervous about powder foundations, because they seem to work best for those with nearly perfect skin but look dry and cakey on anyone who wants a little more than a swipe of coverage. This one surprised me a little bit at first. The compact design is truly unique, with a plastic hinged cover inside to protect the powder and a vented bottom underneath the sponge applicator. As far as the formula itself goes, it glides over the skin and gives moderate coverage. However, I did think it looked a little bit dry and I also saw the tendency for it to emphasize fine lines and larger pores, so I think this would work best for those with well-hydrated, smooth skin.

Toya's Take:
The Face Base comes in an ingenious case – very modern looking in plain, brushed silver with the company name on it. When you open it, there’s a large mirror on top and on the bottom half, a large square of foundation powder and a sponge. The foundation powder is covered by plastic, so it doesn’t get on the mirror – it flips down for easy access. The foundation looks very flaky, but it goes on quite smoothly and doesn’t leave your skin overly dry. It dries to a lovely matte finish and it blended in with my skin perfectly.

Retail Price: $24.00

DeLush Ratings:

vasantipencils.jpgVasanti Pencils (Toya only):
What They Say: "Our lip and eye pencils contain Orange Wax, Vitamin A and Vitamin E – all of which have antioxidant properties and will fight free radicals while they moisturize. Shea butter and jojoba oil have also been added to ensure a creamy formulation that glides on beautifully and lasts all day."

Toya's Take: This pencil is luscious. Vasanti markets the pencils as both eye and lip appropriate. However, the pencil is so moisturizing that, while it feels wonderfully smooth and creamy when applied to the lips, I think it would lead to quite a bit of creasing if used in the eye area.

Retail Price: $13.00

DeLush Rating: (Toya) (because it would crease as an eye pencil)

vasantibalm.jpgVasanti Tinted Lip Balm:
What They Say: "Hooked on that chapstick? Introducting a lip conditioner that gives just a natural hint of colour. It’s got a silky smooth texture and it protects your lips and gives off an incredible shine!

Our tinted lipbalms are loaded with moisturizers, conditioners and natural sunscreens such as: Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Sunflower oil and Olive oil.

The flavours are exotic and fresh- Leaves your lips velvety smooth."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: By far my favorite product of the entire set, this balm is incredibly comfortable and wears like a beautiful sheer lipstick. I LOVE it. This is the first balm I've tried that is packaged exactly like lipstick, and it's really versatile. Whether alone or over lipliner, this feels super-soft and looks lovely. Unlike Toya, I thought that the scent was another highlight of the product, and I'd describe it as slightly fruity - kind of like watermelon. It could be that different shades use different fragrances (I tested Bahamas, a light brown-pink).

Toya's Take: The Tinted Lipbalm is my favorite product of the bunch, except for the ghastly smell! I have no idea what ingredient leads to the stench, but, if possible, Vasanti should remove it, posthaste. How do they expect you to want to apply the product to your lips, which are so close to your nose? God! But, once I got past it, I was thrilled to find that the balm is ultra-moisturizing and the color, while sheer, is more than I expect to find from a tinted lipbalm. I think it would be better classified as a sheer lipstick. Either way, one coat of the Columbia shade, described as “medium neutral brown” was “my lips but better” and two coats gave my lips a beautiful chocolate-y sheen.

Retail Price: $15.00

DeLush Ratings:

vasantishimmers.jpgVasanti Shimmer Powder:
What They Say: "Loose Powder...apply anywhere you desire. For subtle shimmery highlights. Use as an Eyeshadow, highlighter on your brow bone, cheeks, decolleté or anywhere on your body...use your imagination."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I'm not really one to use shimmer in lots of places - typically it stays around the eyes for me. But even just in that aspect, this worked pretty well. The color is completely buildable and can be as bold or sheer as you like, and the glow is nice and subtle, not glaring. Used as a full shadow, it does crease a little after a while but holds on about as well as many shadows I use.

Toya's Take: The Shimmer Powder is a bit messy, like any loose powder, but it gives awesome color, sparkle and glow. Thumbs up!

Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Eyeshadow Duo in Terra Minerals

What They Say:
- Talc-free Mineral formula for an ultra-smooth, natural-looking finish.
- Minimalist formula can help reduce eye irritation.
- For extra-sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers!
- Dual-tone hues for buildable color!

Jamie’s Thoughts: Because my eyes are one of my favorite features, I have spent the last several years trying to figure out the best way to accentuate them. I now own more than 25 different eyeshadows – most of which are sparkly, shiny, or iridescent in some form or fashion. When I received this product to review, I was hesitant given its 100% matte status.

After a couple of days, I ascertained that while perhaps the colors were the best on my complexion, the formula is undoubtedly excellent. (For the record, Physicians Formula has quite a range of shades available in the Talc-free line) The product goes on smoothly and very easily – the dual package design includes two complementary shades, a base color for the lid, and a darker shade for the crease and any dramatic highlighting. Since most mineral-based cosmetics are on the light side (weight, not color) I assumed that I would have to layer a bit to achieve my look, but I was wrong. One swipe was plenty, which ultimately saves me both time and shadow.

A small warning: every time I touched or rubbed my eyes, I took off a layer of the shadow. I looked down at least twice to find my right index knuckle covered in product...that fact aside, there was no creasing at all, and I have wrinkly eyelids! Also, the packaging includes a hidden storage compartment (underneath the main surface) that houses a shadow brush and an oval mirror.

This product is maybe not for me, but still fantastic nonetheless. Great for anyone who has sensitive eyes, or simply likes a dramatic, matte eye.

Review: BECCA Eye Colour Powder (Shimmer)

beccashadow.jpgWhat They Say: "These creamy powders with soft micro-fine shimmer come in a range of essential shades that blend magnificently, imparting a velvety sheen for a range of effects."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: BECCA's leather-feel compacts with little mirrors inside really give these shadows a special feel when you use them. Formula-wise, the shadow is nice and silky, but the shades are pretty sheer. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because you can build a bit, but something you might want to know when considering a purchase. The color stays fairly well, but is not as long-wearing as some others I've tried. All-in-all, a very nice shadow, especially if you like soft subtle colors. However, if you already have trouble keeping eye color from fading, this may not stay on as long as you'd like.

Review: Paula Dorf Transformer

pauladorf.jpgWhat They Say: "This magic solution instantly turns eye shadow into liquid liner. Just place a few drops into eye shadow lid, dab brush into liquid, glide along outer edge of shadow, and then apply to eyelid."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I was hoping to try this ever since Carmindy told us that she swears by this stuff to make shadow liner stay put. It's really simple to use; just follow the directions to put a couple of drops in your shadow container lid, dip your liner brush in the liquid and swipe the brush along the edge of the shadow (you don't want to get it on the rest of the shadow that you use typically for your lids). It really does create a nice, smooth liner that may not be waterproof but is definitely smudgeproof enough to last most of the day without budging or disappearing. This is a handy way to give you more liner choices and experiment with some of your favorite shadow colors.

Estee Lauder Holiday Spirit Collection - Eyeshadow

About Pure Color Eyeshadow: "Multi colors.

Jen's Experience: We've reviewed this eyeshadow before on DeLush with very good results, so this is just an update to let you know about this new shade, Ginger Drop, as part of the Holiday Spirit collection. I have a ton of gold eyeshadows in my make-up drawer in powders and creams and by all different companies. It's probably my favorite shade to wear, and now this color from Estee Lauder is the star of all my golds. I absolutely love the silky soft powder. It goes on so evenly, blends easily, and really stays put. This particular gold has a little bit of shininess to it, but it isn't shimmery, so you can wear it to work or out shopping, or dress it up with dark eyeliner for evening. This and the Lip Palette are the must-haves out of the Holiday Spirit collection, and hopefully this color will become part of the everyday colors from Estee Lauder.

Review: BECCA Jewel Dust Eyeshadow

What They Say: "These exquisitely embellished powders add playful color to the eyes when worn alone, and create rich, exotic tones when layered over neutral eyeshadows.
Created from pure pigments that provide the highest lustre and intensity, this exclusive formulation does not contain talc, fillers, or inferior silver pearl pigments.
To use: Apply with a brush onto bare eyelids for a sheer sparkling wash of translucent color, dab on with a sponge tip applicator or a flat brush for more concentrated color.

Jen's Experience: I'm kind of fascinated at the recent explosion of loose eyeshadow powders. I've tried the L'Oreal HIP Pigments and Laura Mercier Mineral Eye Powder so far, and with this third one, I pronounce them to be far more difficult to use than normal, pressed eyeshadow colors. The Becca Jewel Dust implementation does, however, seem to work for me better than the others that I've tried. As long as I'm not overly ambitious by putting a huge amount on my brush (and with my brush slightly wet), I'm able to keep the eyeshadow from going all over my face as I apply it. The color is not as dense as some of the others I've tried, so it's actually possible, as they say in the description, to go from a beautiful sheer color to a dense, deeper shade. I did find that over the course of the day, it did seem to migrate a bit, but in comparison with other products like this, I am happy with the wear. (But I tend to wear it at night, when the smudging seems to be a little less evident. I can just pretend like I'm going for the smoky eye look.) The more sheer the application, the less migration I saw with the color, so keep that in mind when applying it. The color I went with is Titania, a silver that is perfect with this season's metallics, grey, or black.

If you're really looking forward to trying out some of these loose powder eyeshadows, I think this one is definitely your best bet. The application is easier than others, it wears pretty well, and the color selection is amazing.

Review: Paula Dorf New York Eye Kit

pdnyeyes.jpgWhat They Say: "This shimmering eye palette creates a soft sultry eye that is perfect for all seasons. This kit contains a white with gold flecks highlighter; peach-pink, bronze, and gold green shadow as beautiful accents, lid, or contour colors and finish by lining with a stunning deep aubergine."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: With a quartet of shades that are not only wearable for everyday but also lovely together, this eye palette got my attention right away. The colors are not too dramatic for daytime (in fact, the lighter colors combined can create a subtle gold and pink-hued neutral effect) and can be intensified if desired with the darker shades.

These shadows create a lovely sheen and look just as great at the end of the day as they did when I put them on. I love the applicator enclosed, especially that it has a tiny end for applying the darker shade as liner (I played around with using the gold-green shade as a liner also). You can use the shades in multiple combinations depending on occasion and your mood. All in all, a very usable and high-quality set of shadows.

Review: Three Custom Color Lip Gloss and Smokey Mountain Eyeshadow Trio

3ccsmokey.jpgWhat They Say: (about the Lip Gloss) “These sophisticated shades bestow lips with vibrant color and the luscious formula is creamy and moisturizing, giving lips extreme sheen without feeling sticky.” (About the Smokey Mountain Trio) “This incomparable wet/dry formula for eyes is finely milled imparting a silky texture and satiny finish. This versatile powder can be used as both a shadow and a liner – offering the best of both worlds.”

Toya’s Take: I took the Smokey Mountain Trio along with me to New Jersey for a bellydance weekend, including a performance by my dance troupe. I used it to create a smoky eye effect, using the two shades of gray (Cascade – light gray and Smokey – dark gray) as my highlight and lid color and the Blue Spruce (kind of a dark teal) as a liner. I was impressed. The colors are true and last through a sweaty performance and do give a beautiful, smoky effect. The color combination wasn’t the greatest on my warm skin, but I think it would be great on someone with cooler undertones. The lip gloss I tried was a beautiful neutral pink, worthy of being paired with such a smoky eye. It was soft and creamy and didn’t leave my lips feeling parched. It didn’t last all that long, but most lip glosses don’t and, with such a moisturizing formula, you won’t mind having to reapply.

Review: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Ammo Palette

urbandecayammo.jpgWhat They Say: “Covered in touchable, matte black paper, the compact features a mesmerizing assortment of UD elements - animals, hearts, skulls, and flourishes - gently wafting from a pistol in overlapping textures of violet metallic foil and rich velvety flocking. Upon opening the kit, you're met with endless eye options: 10 best-selling shadows are arranged as five sets of coordinating duos, running the gamut from subtle to sexy. The slim case is complete with a perfectly sized mirror, applicators, and a magnetic closure, so it's sure to stay closed in your handbag.”

Alissa’s Opinion: This is absolutely the best designed palette I have ever owned. The velvety designs, the sleek purple and black case, the magnetic closure and the huge mirror are enough for me to love even without the gorgeous shadows!

The colors that are included in this kit are all perfect for evening looks, but a few of them are nice everyday shadows as well. Sin (light shimmering champagne) is a great base color that works with all the other shades. There is also a highlighting shade, Polyester Bride, and a sparkly black, Oil Slick, that works well as a dramatic liner. All the other colors coordinate with each other for a great smoky eye look. Some of them have a lot of glitter that gets all over the place if you aren’t careful (and maybe even if you are), but it’s so worth it. Basically, if you only plan on buying one product to update your winter look, this one has everything you need and is beautiful to boot!

Review: LaurEss Gem Lights Shadows

lauressgemlights.jpgWhat They Say: "Mineral Gem Lights illuminate and enhance eyes. With colors that gently gleam to colors that sparkle like diamonds, you will find the perfect gem to define your beauty.
(colors reviewed)
Mallard – Deep emerald green
Opal – Creamy undertone with opalescent violet highlights
Mesmerize – Silvery lavender with prismatic flashes of green
Envious – Rich chocolate brown with a glistening green highlight"

Jamie’s Thoughts: Eye shadows are a big obstacle for me – I tend to stay safely within my tried and true line of neutrals and browns. I was both frightened and excited to test out these 4 gorgeous colors from LaurEss’ “Gem Lights” line of mineral-based shadows. Opal and Mallard are deeper, shimmery hues where as Mesmerize and Envious are downright sparkly.

I originally thought Opal would be a great all-over-the-lid neutral, but I was wrong. The purple undertone becomes really noticeable once you start spreading it around – the more you put on, the less it looks like a neutral. My pale skin was just too thin for this color…I suggest this for darker skin tones and olive complexions.

Envious, a sparkly-spangly-makes-me-want-to-do-a-jig-in-my-bathroom brown, is by far my favorite. (Shocker, I know, I am SO predictable) It went on smooth, application was easy, and the color was even almost immediately! This is definitely going into my everyday rotation. Added bonus: It’s not too sparkly for the office.

Mallard, a beyond gorgeous emerald green, looked the most intimidating. In the end, it turned out to be shimmery, smooth, and lovely – not nearly as frightening as it looked in the jar. It’s a bit drastic for my skin tone, but would look AMAZING on someone with darker skin and brown eyes.

I think Mesmerize surprised me the most by being a tasteful sparkler with icy blue tones. It would be great for a night out, but is far too glittery for everyday use. Where was this great shadow when I was in college, huh?!

LaurEssShadows_Oct06.jpg
(on the left: Mesmerize; right: Mallard)

As always, be careful when applying mineral shadows. They are sort of like Thanksgiving dinner – you can always go back for seconds. Don’t dump a big load of it on your eye at first, because 90% of that shadow will end up sitting on your cheekbone in big clumps. Also, the more sparkly shadows will impart some teeny shadow particles in/around your eye – eye rubbers and sensitive eyes, beware.

Review: Laura Mercier Mineral Eye Powder and Wet/Dry Definer Brush

About the Eyeshadow: "Laura Mercier's Mineral Eye Powders delivers an alluring sparkle with its loose powder formula. Highly versatile, these six shades can be applied wet or dry to change the texture and definition of the eyes. Ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested."

About the brush: "Laura Mercier's Wet/Dry Definer Brush is a unique, black synthetic fiber brush with short, pointed bristles perfection for precise application of wet & dry formulations. Extremely versatile, the Wet/Dry Definer Brush lays down colour evenly and the tapered tip allows for precise lining and filling in of the lash line."

Jen's Experience: After seeing how amazing this season's deep colors can be, I was really excited to have the opportunity to try these new mineral powders from Laura Mercier. Their regular Eye Shadow and Eye Creme are in my rotation of make-up that I wear both to work and out on the town. These eye powders looked really shimmery, so I assumed I would have to reserve them for evenings. Out of the colors I tried, Galaxy is a silvery white, Constellation is a deep purple, and Meteor is a jewel green.

I tried out Galaxy first, since it seemed the tamest, but quickly found that it wasn't very noticable on its own -- it needs another color to make it work. I moved on to Constellation, which reminds me a lot of their creme color in Titanium. Used wet with the definer brush, this color makes a great base for an ultra-dark eyes look. The color goes on almost as a charcoal. Meteor is the most striking of the three and the most intense, but was also my favorite. Even though it's a jewel green, it looked great with a variety of outfits even for daytime wear.

I was actually surprised (and relieved) by the lack of sparkle in the eyeshadows. They are still irridescent enough to create interest, but they're not so garish that they can't be worn to work or out for a casual shopping day. The color is really dense, and while I may lose some intensity throughout the day, I'm always surprised to come home and still have my eye colour relatively the same.

It's not always in the same place though. I found that when I attempted to apply this eyeshadow dry, I made a mess of it and ended up with flecks of shadow all over my cheeks. But when I apply it wet, I get so much shadow on the definer brush that it's easy to over-apply. It creases somewhat, so I end up applying the color to most of my eyelids. I also have issues with the eyeshadow migrating when I rub my eyes. If I keep myself busy and manage not to touch my eyes, the eyeshadow will stay perfectly in place for hours, though.

While this probably won't get a place in my regular eyeshadow rotation like my other Laura Mercier shadows, I will definitely keep these shadows around to throw a little interest in my make-up routine from time to time. The wet/dry definer brush is something that is a good pick for someone who is trying for the smoky or ultra-dark eyes look.

Fall Product Reviews: DuWop BronzeRush and Rose Eyes Palette

duwopboth.jpgWhat They Say(about BronzeRush) "Bronzerush is a palette that has everything you need to add color and life to your complexion. The gorgeous gold metallic kit includes a velvety smooth powder bronzer with a gel-based translucent blush, for a pop of fresh cheek color. Bronzerush gives you a warm healthy glowing tan, flushed rosy cheeks, and an all-over sun-kissed radiance that cannot be achieved by the average bronzer." (about the Rose Eyes Palette) "You can create a new look for every mood, season, or time of day with this gorgeous rose-themed palette. Set includes a true rose base shade, soft pink shimmer, soft rosy bronze, peachy-gold shimmer, and a deep plum-brown cream liner, plus a double-ended flat liner/eye blender brush."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow:(about BronzeRush) The sight of this palette, upon opening, kind of made me nervous. To me, it looked pretty bold. But on I soldiered, and put the stuff on anyway. The bronzer portion is actually less alarming than I imagined. It appears more orange-y in the compact than it comes off on my skin, but it is rather sparkly and maybe just tawny enough that I'd prefer it for spring or summer, but you may like it just fine, especially for those nights out. The little pot of creme blush to add on top for a bit of a rosy hue is NOT super-bright on your skin. It's actually quite sheer, and I thought rather pretty. If you've got slightly oily skin as I tend to get by around 5 o'clock in the evening if I don't powder or blot, this may not stay on as well as you'd like and you probably would prefer a powder blush for more wearability. Otherwise it's these two are a really nice combo.

(about the Rose Eyes Palette) This I absolutely LOVE. The colors are so perfectly matched for highlighting and deepening of the base color, and the generously-mirrored case is slim and compact. I think these colors would be flattering on practically anyone, whatever your skin tone or hair/eye coloring. The shadows are silky and really do wear fabulously - I didn't notice any creasing during the day. I was a little concerned about the cream liner, because it is such a soft formula. While I did smudge it myself a tiny bit when I applied it for a soft-focus look, the lines absolutely stayed put (surprisingly well) for HOURS. (Click the pic to the right to enlarge.)

Fall Product Review: Tarte Indelible Wink

tarteindelible.jpgWhat They Say: "Our liquid liner & shadow set is sure to make you feel like a vixen. Maybe you’ll play it safe with a sleek, budgeproof line or go a little edgy with a smudged, sexified look.

Line ‘em and leave ‘em in 5 seconds flat.

How how to get that indelible wink (and keep ‘em coming back for more):
1. Starting at the inner corner of the eye, line your upper lid with the liquid liner—keeping the liner tip as close to the lashline as possible.
2. Using the powder liner tip, gently retrace over the liquid liner—this will smooth, set and blend the line."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: Well, once again Tarte has to get points for creative packaging. This is a very unique combo, applicator-wise.

I just wish I could say I was as completely excited about the product itself. While the liquid liner end has a pointed sponge applicator (which I usually prefer to a brush because you have more control of the liquid), I felt like it was a little hard to maintain a perfect straight line. The formula just seemed to "bleed" a little and thus be kind of uneven. Once it's applied, it does stays on well enough to pass, though if you rub it even the tiniest bit it almost peels off, which was kind of strange.

The shadow end is a novel idea, with its sort of spring-loaded tip that absorbs shadow until you unscrew it from the tube. However, I found the formula to be far too crease-forming to really be something I could use daily. It creates a great smoky look on top of the liner initially, but within the hour I had to wipe a bit of smudge off my lid.

I have to say, this was my first disappointment with a Tarte product. Perhaps it will wear better on you if you have less natural oils on your skin than I do or perhaps apply a primer to your lids first. But for me, it's not up to par.

Fall Product Review: Pieces from the glōminerals Fall Makeup Lineup

glomineralsnew.jpgWhat They Say: glōGloss: "Get the "Star Treatment" with incredible shine that feels fabulous. glōGloss melts onto your lips for a perfect, smooth finish. New for fall: lilac luster and star struck."

glōShimmer brick: "Be an instant sensation with our NEW glōShimmer brick in gleam. Four beautiful colors that you can swirl together for a captivating glō or use individually to illuminate that shining star in you."

glōPrecision eye pencil: "Achieve the fame you deserve with glōPrecision eye pencils in deep olive and plum. Dreamy, daring, legendary."

glōEye Shadow: "For that special effect, create your own color intensity from sheer to deep to totally dramatic! New for fall: berry, eggplant, and fern."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This was my first experience with the glōminerals product line. I was overall very pleasantly surprised.

glomineralslip.jpgFirst of all, the gloss (shown in lilac), has a slight vanilla scent and is incredibly soft and moisturizing. I like its weight, and it lasts pretty well. The gloss also has a very slight opalescent sheen that makes lips look a little more voluptuous, too (I'm not going to say I didn't like that).

gloshimmerbrick.jpgThe new glō Shimmer Brick is a (very generous-sized) quad of completely wearable soft-shimmer shades. (the picture does NOT do the colors justice, TRUST ME). Each one could easily be used on cheeks or lids as color or subtle highlighter. They also layer very beautifully together and are incredibly soft in texture. This was perhaps my favorite part of their Fall lineup.

glomineralsshadowc.jpgNext are the eye shadow (in fern) and eye pencil (in olive). The shadow builds really easily just as they say, because of its very fine consistency. This shade also has just enough very fine flecks of gold to make it even prettier. The only thing that wasn't perfect about it was that it did crease a little bit after several hours. The eye pencil goes on smoothly and has a handy sponge tip on the other end if you'd like to smudge it a bit to create a more smoky look. The pencil could have lasted a little bit longer without wearing off, but it held up fairly well for one not billed as "longwear".

Fall Product Review: L'Oreal HIP High Intensity Pigments Shadow Stick and Shocking Shadow Pigments

About the shadow stick: "Apply dry to contour and define your eyes with rich color. For a more intense look, use wet. For precision application, sharpen before use."

About the Shocking Shadow Pigments: "With professional brush.
Make them stare with multi-dimensional color that brightens and reflects. Now with HIP high intensity pigments shocking shadow pigments you can create professional eye looks with six stunning shades of rich color, which can be used individually or layered together to make eyes pop."

Jen's Experience (and it was an experience): I purchased these products from my local drugstore to talk about in conjunction with the gold smoky eyes tutorial you'll see later on today. Although I was able to make some use out of the Shocking Shadow Pigments product, I found the Shadow Stick to be utterly useless.

I thought the Shadow Stick in Exquisite, a nice sand color in the packaging, would make a nice base color. I took it out of the packaging and tried to sharpen it as the packaging recommends (only I don't have a L'Oreal branded sharpener, perhaps my downfall). I promptly managed to break the stick in half, crumbling one side into chalky, coppery bits that I felt compelled to try to use by pressing against to my eyelids and rubbing, without luck I might add. After I gave up and threw away the remaining bits, I applied the unbroken side to my eyelid without trying to sharpen it at all. The result? Somewhere between copper and circus orange. I also tried using it wet but couldn't get any respectable amount of color to my eyelids. This product is going directly into the bin.

I soldiered on with the Shocking Shadow Pigments and did get some nice results, although the color that I used, Tenacious, another copper, was not quite what I was hoping for. I do realize these products are supposed to be bright and shocking, but I would be happier if they just applied appearing anything like their packaging would lead you to believe. I used the (very nice) brush that came with the product to first apply the product dry. I found that my contacts wouldn't tolerate the runaway sparkles from the shadow, so I was forced to use the product wet. It's not as bright and the color is much more pleasant wet, but if you're really into the iridescence, you'll be disappointed that the sparkles are not as predominant when applied wet.

Although I am particularly upset with my purchase of the Shadow Stick, the Shocking Shadow Pigments were also somewhat of a disappointment. However, I would actually not mind trying that product in a more funky shade of blue or pink when I am feeling bold.

Fall Product Review: Estee Lauder Pure Color Single Eyeshadow

What They Say: "“The new intensity in eye color. Multi colors. Multi finishes. Major impact. Brilliant new colors, silky new formula looks richer, wears longer, without creasing. Sleek, modern compact includes applicator and mirror. Make a statement with one dramatic shade, lash to brow. Or play with all the colors and matte to high pearl finishes. Now see your eyes take on a new brilliance. Fragrance free. Opthalmologist tested.”

Toya’s Take: I tried the Pure Color Single Eyeshadow in Lagoon, which is a light frosty blue and Ivy, which is a very dark forest green. The first thing I noticed is how cute the packaging is – clear, hard plastic so that you can see the actual color. Inside the package is a small mirror and a sponge-tip applicator, which I, of course, never used. (Just don’t, y’all. The color doesn’t apply as well and it tugs on your skin. But I digress.) I decided to try them out during a dance audition, when I’d be dancing for four hours straight. Lagoon didn’t do very well on me – the frosty blue kind of turned gray on my skin. But the Ivy is really nice – the dark green made my brown eyes browner. I think it’ll be great to do a green smoky eye. The shadows felt silky smooth when applied and lasted a really long time – straight through a long, sweaty audition.

Jamie’s Thoughts: At first glance, I fell in love with the packaging. Like the rest of the line, each eye shadow appears “frozen” in a block of clear acrylic – they look like little ice cubes! Perfect for fall and winter.

The shades I received, a powdery pink and lavender, were soft, sweet, and completely outside my comfort zone in regards to color. I soldiered on through my fear of pastels and found that the product is very smooth, and easy to apply. It’s subtle and mature in a way that allows you to put several layers on (to intensify the color) without looking like an extra from a Pat Benatar music video. The pink brightened up my eye quite nicely – one of my coworkers even mentioned that I looked really fresh and awake. Bonus!

Note to eye rubbers: the shadow moves around a bit on the lid, so be cautious when you itch.

Jen's Experience: When I first started using these eyeshadows, I was concerned that the shades I was using, Pink Ice and Cinnamon, would be too pale and would look, well...weird. They are a little on the pale side compared to the sand and steel colors that are normally in my palette, but I think I need to rethink my make-up wardrobe after wearing these shadows for a while, because I don't think I've ever gotten so many complements on my eye make-up before.

Cinnamon over Pink Ice

I use the lighter Pink Ice on the entire lid with a eyeshadow brush (or just my fingertip), all the way up to my eyebrow and then follow with Cinnamon in the crease area, using a Blender brush to even out the color. I follow that up with a black eyeliner for interest, or a khaki for a more natural look. I also found that Pink Ice was a good base color for other eyeshadows in my collection, particularly Chanel Pink Lame.

I was really surprised by how long-lasting these shadows are considering the amount of shimmer in them. They last all day for me, even though I am an admitted eye rubber. I do generally manage to rub away the eyeliner that I've applied over the eyeshadow, but this is a problem I am willing to work on since these shadows work so beautifully for me.

Fall Product Review: M.A.C. Pigment in ROCKOCCO Shade, Blue Brown

macpigmentjar.jpgWhat They Say: "Pigment is a highly concentrated loose colour powder that contains ingredients to help it adhere to the skin. Pigment comes in an excellent range of colours. Use to create a subtle wash of colour or an intense effect. Pigment does not streak or cake, is easy to blend and long-lasting."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I've reviewed M.A.C.'s pigment powder already, but wanted to give you a peek at one of the new shades this season.

First of all, don't be scared of these powders. True, if you're not careful they might get a bit messy , but they also don't necessarily have to be as intense on your eyes as they look in the jar. For instance, this is Blue Brown when applied lightly:

macpigment4.jpg

But of course, the real appeal of the Pigment is the gorgeous sheen and semi-bold color that can be achieved, as seen here when it's layered on a bit more:

macpigment2.jpg

You can also use Pigment as an eyeliner, but here's where it gets tricky. I use a cosmetic q-tip, dip the pointed end into the powder just a little bit (usually there's enough on the lid of the jar to use instead), then push the tip onto a kleenex to get off the excess (otherwise it WILL fall onto your face) and then apply. In fact, with darker pigments it's very important to note how you apply it to your lids, as well. Sometimes I use my fingertip lightly, or a sponge-tip applicator. I find that a shadow brush is a little messier because the powder doesn't "stick" to it as well.

macpigment5.jpg

As you can also see, while the sheen part is really pretty, this color turned a bit reddish-brown on the outer edges of the shadow (where the sheen wasn't as strong), which I don't mind at all but reminds me to tell you to always check the powder on your skin to see how the color pulls on you.

Fall Product Review: Sue Devitt Silky Eye Shadows (in Three New Shades)

suedevitt1.jpgWhat They Say: "A comprehensive selection of fashion's most sought after colors. Silky Eye Shadow shades interact with each other harmoniously to intensify, highlight, and contour the eye area offering a crease-resistant, long-lasting application that holds to professional standards. Available in silky or matte textures."

(Click picture to enlarge. Colors shown are Norland, perfect for the dark sultry eyes of Fall; Midnight Sun, a glowing peachy pink that could look good on anyone and fits right in with the trend of adding touches of unexpected color to your look; Westmann Isles, a vibrant but wearable icy purple-blue that will get you in on the New Blue trend but won't look garish.)

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: Well, this one isn't going to take very long. This is one of the best shadows I've ever used. To put it simply, they go on super-smooth, have a beautiful hint of sheen, and stay on true for HOURS. (It even lasted once through a workout and shower with no creasing!) At the end of a day there is very small bit of creasing, but I am completely impressed by the wearability overall. And these new shades are really gorgeous for not only Fall but throughout the year.

Fall Product Review: Lulu Beauty Eyeshadow

What They Say: "Made from micronized powders, this shadow has an incredible feel that blends easily, and will not crease or fade."

Jen's Experience: The color I tested in this Lulu Eyeshadow is Screen Test, a bright, jewel-toned green. I might actually pick out this color from the store if I was feeling particularly bold, under the assumption, of course, that the color would not be as bright when I actually wore it. Which is not the case.

Observe:

"Screen Test"

It's pretty bright in the picture, and when I first put it on, I thought it was downright garish. But, after I put on some jet black eyeliner and mascara to anchor it, I was able to wear it to work without feeling self-conscious (okay, maybe a little).

It's kind of a shame that the color is a little too bold for me, because the eyeshadow itself is absolutely top notch. The texture is unbelievably soft. I've had shadows that claimed to be cashmere soft that didn't even compare to the softness of this micronized powder.

The main thing that impressed me about the eyeshadow is how long it wears. I can't ever seem to make eyeshadow stay on past lunch, and this one -- which I wore to work by justifying that it would wear away quickly like bright colors generally do -- wore all day long and lost very little of its initial intensity.

So I am not a big fan of the green, but I like the texture so much that I would definitely buy this shadow in one of less dramatic shades and wear it often.

What They Say: " A highly original eyeshadow that blends sophistication, luxury and fashion in one! The innovative, embossed surface reflects the intricate beauty of lamé, weaving together three opulent layers of silky powder in gold, silver and rose tones."

Jen's Experience: This was the product that I was drooling over the most this season, and I think it may be my biggest disappointment. With all the work they went into to create the separate colors in their "opulent layers", the end result is a purplish-pink that is bright but not all that becoming on me. I refused to admit it at first, and wore it daily, but after a while I just had to admit that it really wasn't the best color on me.

I also found that the color didn't last that long no matter what I tried. Primer underneath, a base of cream shadow, powder on top -- it didn't matter, the color was gone within 4 hours of application.

This was going to be my staple eyeshadow for the season, but sadly, I'm just not all that impressed.

Tip: One way to really make this color pop is with a dark purple eyeliner. I found that it really complemented the purple in the shadow.

Retail Price: $40.00 (Neiman Marcus) It's selling out at this point, so if this is something you're wanting to try for yourself, hurry to your local department store!

New Collection: Bibo Cosmetics "Blackout" Fall 2006

biboblackout.jpgWhat They Say: "The lights go dark, the music beins to thump, and a still blackness fills the room. You hear the click, click, click of a long-legged heel...then a camera snaps, triggering a chain of illuminate flashes aimed straight at the runway. Bibo's Fall Collection, Blackout, is the only thing you see as the start whites of the model's eyes project against a billboard of dark, sultry shades. It's a combination of glam-rock meets modern chic with dramatic eyes and a high-gloss lip. Incredibly strong, moody, and mysterious - but most of all gorgeous!

Seize the Spotlight - Long legs are overrated. Draw attention upward with a killer glance from a powerful smoky eye. Four stealthy charcoal shades line, layer and smudge while three deceiving suede shades highlight, blend and secure. This isn't your average charcoal: bronze, burgundy and indigo make this all-inclusive palette unique.

Your Moment to Shine - Create unbelievable shine with a coat of Flash and Flicker lipgloss sure to turn heads. Capture an audience with an energizing bronze gloss or revitalizing berry tone."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: First of all, let's start by saying that the packaging for this collection is dark and sleek, very fitting for its name. I love the squareness of the (large!) lip gloss tubes and the eyeshadow palette. The only negative in terms of packaging would be that it really took a few times (and some pretty persistent trying on my part) to get the top shadow tray to slide out. Once I did it about 3 times, it came much easier. On the plus side, included is an applicator with sponge tip on one end and liner brush on the other, so you can use the darker shades along the lash line (I did this with great results and the shadows last very long as liners).

biboblackouteyes.jpg
(Click pic to enlarge.)

As far as the actual products go, Bibo has once again impressed me. Their silky true-color shadows stay for hours and resist creasing, and these new shades are very versatile. This set can be used for daytime sheer prettiness or nighttime drama. The lower tray of suede shadows wears well for day or as base colors for the more rich, slightly shimmery shades. I acheived the look above by applying the Bronze charcoal shadow on top of the Pink suede (which resulted in a bit of a deep rich plummy color). Also, I did apply some of the Bronze with a damp cosmetic Q-tip, so keep in mind that the charcoal shadows, though looking quite dramatic in the palette, can actually be applied much more sheer dry.

biboblackoutlips2.jpg

As usual, Bibo's glosses are creamy and long-lasting. These two shades seem to be infused with teeny-tiny shimmer that simply increases the shine and glow on the lips. The color above is the bronze (Flicker).

Estee Lauder Azurée The Eye Duo

What They Say: "Experience the look, the feel, the beauty of azurée, Summer 2006, from the Tom Ford Estée Lauder Collection. Three color palettes--azurée, st. tropée and cap bronzée. Three mysterious places that epitomize the legends of the beach. Create your look with the shades from one palette and the universal must-haves that work with all 3 palettes. Tom Ford on the azurée makeup collection: "This is a collection for the woman whose fantasy takes her away to sexy, remote beaches."

Sweep on a lighter shade over entire eyelid. Use the deeper shade on the outer edge of eye. Smooth on sparingly and blend."

Jen's Experience:The shades in the Azuree eye palette are very similar to the Laura Mercier shades I bought a few months back. But like all the Azuree shades, they're designed for someone with naturally warm skin tones or a really nice tan. This isn't to say I haven't been wearing these shadows constantly since I got them. I like the lightly shimmery color. They go on so smoothly. They feel like they're full of moisture, which means they're also really easy to blend. I found that I especially liked the darker brown color as an eyeliner when slightly moistened and applied with a thin brush. Since they're vry moisture rich, they fade a litle more quickly than some other eyeshadows I have, but you can definitely extend the wear by pressing the color with a bit of transparent powder. If you're getting the other Azuree color products, I highly recommend picking up the eyeshadow as well to round out your collection.

Review: Bibo Eye Shadow (in New Shades!)

What They Say: "Ultra-silky eye shadow applies evenly, blends and builds easily. New shades include: Muse, Smolder Duo, Subliminal Duo, Illusion Trio, Luna Duo and Dusk Duo.
* Vitamin E protects, moisturizes & conditions. * Apply wet for more intense color, dry for a veil of color over the lid."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This definitely another winner from Bibo in my book. These shadows are amazingly soft and look beautiful whether applied lightly or a bit thicker for a more intense look. Available in both matte and a subtle shimmer finish, as well as fabulous duo combinations (see the new shades and the others by enlarging the picture above), these look pretty and not at all dry or powdery on the eye. If you need products that don't emphasize eye dryness or crèpe-iness or if you simply want a shadow that is less powdery-looking, Bibo's range of shadow colors will make you and your lids very happy!

Drugstore Favorites Week Review: Maybelline Roller Color Eye Shadow

What They Say: "Roll on for a sheer, loose powder look. Easy, no brush application. No spills or flaking."

Jen's Experience: I've been seeing these new loose powder eyeshadows everywhere, so I had to give this one a try. I tried out "Twirling Taupe", which is sort of a muted gold with tiny sparkles. I am a big fan of gold eyeshadow; I've got subtler shades that I wear to work and some really fantastic glittery ones for a night on the town. What I like about this particular gold is that it doesn't apply too much color at once. The roller ball tip forces you to put it on in layers. I find that you need to shake the container from time to time to keep the color flowing, but once you do, it applies easily, without requiring a lot of pressure on the delicate eye area. I was very pleasantly surprised at how long-lasting this product is. Without any base or powder it lasts 4-6 hours. Maybelline can count me in as a fan with this product -- I'm trying the lavender next!

Drugstore Favorites Week Review: Maxeye Shadows by Max Factor

maxfactor.jpgWhat They Say: "There′s a lot to love about our hot new MAXeye Shadows. From Metalicious to Pajama Party, our hot three-color combos come straight off the runway. They can be applied dry for a silky-sweet day look, or wet for those bold diva nights. Either way, they are developed for mix ′n match fabulousness, and engineered for MAXimum results. A perfect applicator? Our professional dual wet-dry shadow brush, available separately."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I decided to try these new shadow sets in two of the less neutral selections, Pajama Party and Gypsy Moon. But whatever shade you choose, I think you'll be happy with this new part of Max Factor's revamped line. The trio of colors in each little compact are perfectly matched, with two complementing colors that can be placed strategically or layered to create a new color, and a coordinating highlighting color for the inside corners of the eyes and the browbones. The powders go on very smooth and evenly and have really decent staying power and very minimal creasing. These shadows are very tastefully shimmery, just enough to give your eyes a subtle glow.

Review: Bella il Fiore Rollerball Eye Shadow Set in SOHO

bellashad.jpgWhat They Say: "As Seen In "O" Magazine, September 2005! This trend setting eye shadow uses a fun roller ball to evenly coat the eye with Bella's ultra rich color formulation. Simply roll it on, then blend with your fingertips. Add different shades for a sexy layering effect. Fun and fabulous! Colors: Cracklin Rosie (Pink), Be (White), Good Time Sue (Green), Red Red Wine (Plum)."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This cute set of 4 shades is much more wearable than you may think. The shimmer isn't tacky at ALL, it's pretty and soft. The colors can be applied incredibly sheer or built up for a more dramatic effect. The application is EASY and the shadow doesn't fall all over the place when you roll it out onto the lid. It comes out very uniformly (just make sure you angle the applicator up-and-down a bit instead of more horizontally). I only noticed the tiniest bit of fading over the course of the day, but otherwise it still looked pretty. Shown at left: Good Time Sue (Green)

What They Say: (about all of their shadows) "Highly-pigmented powder. Applies evenly, blends well." (about the Velvent finish shadow) "Soft look finish with high-colour intensity. Has a plush velvety look and feel."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow:
(Click pic to see shade in greater detail.) This is an extremely soft shadow, perfect for blending and creating a smooth look. It has good staying power as well. In particular, this shade (Slip Pink) is an almost universally-flattering pink with the tiny hints of sparkle appropriate for women of any age and would be a practical addition to your springtime makeup bag. At post time, this shade is actually sold out on M·A·C's website. (Update: Thanks to the reader who alerted us that this is a limited edition shade, so you may have a difficult time locating it!) Prestige Eyshadow

What They Say: "Soft to the touch silky powder formula provides smooth, flawless application. Non-creasing wet or dry formulation. In 64 matte and shimmering shades."

Jen's Experience: After I fell in love with Prestige Cosmetics' automatic eyeliner, I felt compelled to try some of their other products. I love it when I find a drugstore product that gives more expensive products a run for their money. This is certainly one of those products. The color I chose, Glisten, is very comparable to the Platinum eye cream I recently purchased from Laura Mercier. This powder applies easily and blends well. (I use my fingers rather than a brush.) I love the way the golden color brightens up the eye area, and the color is subtle so that it just sets off the other colors in my palette. It doesn't last as long as some of the department store brands I've purchased lately, but you can definitely extend your wear to 6 or 8 hours by pressing powder overtop. If you're looking for an inexpensive way to build up a spectrum of eyeshadows, Prestige is a great place to start.

Laura Mercier Eye Color

I went to the Laura Mercier counter looking for some new eyeshadow colors, but came away with a modern take on some classic colors. With a fair complexion and blue eyes, I've been enjoying the brighter pastel colors that have been popular this season. But what to wear with the new khakis and trenchcoats that I've been seeing for Spring?

Laura Mercier's Metallic Creme Eye Color ($22.00) is the start to this totally modern neutral palette. Metallics are very trendy right now, and these eye creams will help give your eyes dimension without being overly shiny. Platinum is my base color for most occasions. It's a slightly pink-y beige color that helps to even out the darkness in my eye and give the main eyeshadow colors a base to really make them stand out when I apply it to the entire eye area all the way up to my eyebrow. For evening, their titanium looks great with or without another eyeshadow color. Cream eye shadows often don't last throughout the day, but applying on top of a foundation base and really setting it with powder make Laura Mercier's eye cream from morning throughout the day flawlessly.

Over top of the cream eyeshadow, I have two Laura Mercier Shimmer Eye Colours in Sable and Star Fruit ($20.00/ea). I apply the Sable (much darker than it appears on their site) on the area of my lower lids. I use my eyeshadow brush to bring the color above the crease on the outer edges of my eye. Finally, I take a little of the Star Fruit and put it on the apple of my eye lid, just for a little extra dimension.

You can easily bring this look into the evening by taking some dark grey eyeshadow, such as Laura Mercier's in Black Smoke and use it to line the edges of the eye on the top and bottom lashes in a very thin line. Then, blend the line you've created on the top lids upwards to create a smokey effect that is understated and elegant.

Not only am I in love with the colors, they're clearly high-quality products. The texture is very creamy. They apply easily and without creasing. Plus, they last throughout the day. These Laura Mercier eye colors are my best make-up purchase in quite a while.

Tarte "Miss Fix-It" Spring 2006

I have a soft spot in my heart for Tarte, with its ingeniously lovely packaging and creative naming of its products, as well as its typically high-quality cosmetics. The "Miss Fix-It" line for Spring 2006 is no exception. Check out what Tarte has added to its long line of fabulous products. Want something fun and girly to add some "spring" to your beauty routine? Let me introduce you...

missfixitpal.gifTrifold Eye/Lip Compact ($44): "That cool scarf? She knitted it herself. The to-die-for rhinestone encrusted phone? Oh, just a side project. Jewelry making, sewing, cake decorating…this girl can do it all. Let your creativity run as wild as hers does with this playful palette full of candy-colored combinations for eyes & lips.

Shades include: shimmery champagne eyeshadow, shimmery purple eyeshadow, shimmery teal eyeshadow, matte bright turquoise eyeshadow, shimmery pink & shimmery lilac lip glosses, shimmery gold highlighter."

Melissa Says: What a useful AND lovely compact. The gloses are very sheer but beautifully shiny. The shadows are FUN but wearable. (Plus, Tarte's shadows are very silky and long-wearing.) There are two high-quality sponge applicators included as well. This would be a wonderful way to add some color and a touch of glow to your look in a purse-friendly compact.

picperfect.gifPicture Perfect Eyelash Curler $15: "Smile and say “squeeze!” With this lash curler, getting a picture perfect curl is a snap. For a match made in Hollywood, use with Lights, Camera, Lashes! 3-in-1 mascara."

Melissa Says: This curler is spring-hinged, which helps create a tighter grip on your lashes. Fabulous.

toolbox.gifThe Toolbox: Brow Know-How $32: "Construct a picture-perfect brow in minutes using these easy tools:
1. “Prep the work zone” by tweezing any stray hairs
2. “Lay down the foundation” using the smooth brow wax
3. “Fill in the cracks” with your shade-specific brow powder or brow pencil.
4. “Seal the deal” with a glossy topcoat of brow gel.
No hard hat required.
Kit includes: brow gel, brow pencil, tweezer, brow brush, brow powder, brow wax, and 3 brow stencils, plus a compact with a mirror!

Three universal shades:
light: for blonde to light brown hair
medium: for medium brown to red hair,
dark: for dark brown to black hair"

*I didn't get an opportunity to review this item in the "Miss Fix-It" line, but I can't wait to give it a try. The well-groomed brow trend is not going away anytime soon!

blotbook.gifLittle Blot Book Shine Control to Go $32 (coming soon!): "Shine control to go! Oil: it’s a girl’s dirtiest little secret. No one wants to get caught with even the teensiest hint of a sheen (or worse, all-out shine).

The solution? Hiding the evidence, of course. Little blot book gives you two ways to send shine undercover: First, use the (tiny) blotting sheets for quick touch-ups then dust on mattifying powder* to tone down future glare. And no need to worry about being obvious…with a compact this inconspicuous, your secret will always be safely stashed away.

*mattifying powder contains Vitamin E & Vitamin A, some of the most effective antioxidants to prevent premature signs of again. Also includes green tea, aloe, & chamomile to soothe and nourish you skin."

Melissa Says: Wow. This is perhaps one of the most fun items in this line. The "book" is substantial but should fit into most purses. The brush applicator for the mattifying powder is incredibly soft, and the powder itself cuts down shine without that nasty pale-powdered look. It's completely invisible on your skin. And the tiny blotting papers hiding behind the brush pop up like little post-its and are wonderful for on-the-go quick fixes. Of course, there is a large mirror inside the compact as well. I have a feeling this little book and I will become very good friends.

newcheek0106.gifCloud Nine Cheekstain (NEW SHADE!) $28: "Our most popular product! This water-based push up gel stick is perfect for all skin types. No skill required - just dab it on and go. Wear it over or under foundation, with or without powder blush - it lasts all day. There’s no oil, so it won’t clog your pores. Still not convinced? We’ve been awarded “best blush” in InStyle, Cosmo & Self."

Melissa Says: I've never tried one of Tarte's famous cheekstains before. I must say, I've always shied away from any liquid or cream blush because I always felt that it looked bad on my skin. This unbelievably sheer formula really surprised me. It's easy to apply, smells like a lollipop or kool-aid (really!) and stays pretty all day. Personally, this shade might have been just a TAD too light for me, as I usually feel really pale and want a little more color. (I wouldn't hesitate to try another shade, though.) But it's very beautiful and natural, and your face doesn't get slick and greasy-looking with this formula. I use this when I just want a little bit of glow around the house, but then use it as a base for a little swipe of powder blush to go out (it actually helps powder blush stay on, too!).

newgloss0106.gifFerris & Sloane Double Ended Lipgloss (NEW SHADE!) $19: "Our lipglosses are back with brand-new components! You can even snap each gloss in and out so you can mix and match, or just take one half with you. Our new and improved double-ended lipglosses are available in our 15 original shades, plus six new duos.

Note: Our new shades: "ronald & cindy" and "lloyd & diane" are coming soon!"

Melissa Says: I've reviewed Tarte's double-ended gloss before, and these two shades are very light and sheer, with great staying power and shine.

neweye0106.gifMona Lisa Eyeliner (NEW SHADE!) $18: "Think of your eyes as an artist's dream...the ultimate blank canvas. With our eyeliners in your hand, the possibilities are endless. Our super-creamy formula lets you smudge, shade and blend your way to a masterpiece (no MFA required)."

Melissa Says: I have green eyes, so I always hesitate to try any liner in any green, but this lovely teal-green actually makes my eyes stand out and look wide awake.

Dior DiorShow Eyecolor

What They Say: "These high-tech brush on shadow crèmes glide on smooth, and stay on all day, thanks to the budge-free, smudge-free waterproof formula, and powdery, velvet finish."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I love this shade, Violet Showroom. The applicator is nice; you twist the end several clicks to get the cream shadow to come up to the applicator brush. What I did notice, however, was that once you've brushed the formula onto your lids, it is necessary to use your fingertip to smooth the shadow anyway. Unfortunately, once you apply one coat of the color it is quite difficult to get a second swipe to blend well; it smears a bit into unneven areas. Overall, the best method for applying is to brush on the entire lid with the brush applicator, then use your fingertip to TAP the color evenly.

Aside from this application issue, once the color is on your eyes and dries to a silky powder formula, it stays on beautifully and lasts with no smudging. In the pic (click it to enlarge) you can see that I used the color not only on the lid, but also to lightly trace my lower lashline. This is where that applicator really is a bonus.

Bottom Line
: If you can get the hang of the application, it's definitely worth it for long wear in very pretty shades (see here). If you want something that is less fuss (and if this is out of your budget), don't bother.

Smashbox Single Eye Shadow

What They Say: "These of-the-moment shades are dreamed up on the sets of top photo shoots and can be mixed or matched to create your favorite color combinations. The long-lasting formula glides on easily with superb blendability. Available in three great formulas: matte, shimmer and sparkle."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This is the softest, creamiest powder eyeshadow I've ever come across. It actually shocked me. I keep making people feel it..."You'll never believe this. You HAVE to touch it. See?!? See how soft it is?"

I got a matte shade, Smashing Flat Screen. You can just imagine how fabulously it goes onto the eyelid with that soft texture. And the end result when applied is smooth and gorgeous - very blendable as well. I noticed just a tiny bit of creasing at the end of the day (which could have probably been avoided with base), but I still consider this one of my "luxury" shadows.

Urban Decay Eye Shadow

What They Say: "Urban's pigment-intense, low binder shadows make for a color-rich sparkle and shimmer. Incredibly blendable. Very versatile. Try them wet, use them dry. Get sparkle, shimmer, matte or sheen looks, it's your choice.

-Easily layered - get a sheer effect or a dramatic look
-Super soft, silky texture
-Staying power - lasts all day and into the night
-Shimmers are prismatic; mattes are creamy

Tip: Use the shadows dry for a softer look, wet for more dramatic eyes. Dust on your face and shoulders with our Powder brush for an unearthly shimmer."

Jen's Experience: When I first got some of these eyeshadows, they seemed so bright and shimmery that I reserved them for nighttime. I wore them dry first with just a single layer, but once I became used to the bright colors, like Green Goddess and Midnight Cowboy, I was hooked. I ventured to layering them to get a very intense effect. Wetting my eyeshadow brush before applying gives the shadow the appearance that it was painted on. I found that it really did stay on all night, but it definitely stayed on better if I applied it wet. I also found that applying it in multiple layers over a base made it more long lasting than applying it in a single layer. As would be expected, I suppose. After a few weeks of wearing this stuff strictly out on the town, I have branched out and I wear some nearly every day to work. I avoid the more sparkly colors and wear the more matte or frosted colors and only in a single layer. It's like that one final piece of jewelry that just pulls your outfit together.

Overall, I think Urban Decay's eye shadows are absolutely outstanding. They're versatile, the colors are fantastic, and they don't bother my eyes. These great shadows are a definite buy -- not just one, but three or four!

Tarte Eyeshadow Compact

What They Say: "Our satiny wet/dry shadows come in a stunning range of demi-matte and shimmery shades. Better still? They’re each packaged in tarte’s signature lilac leather compact and, complete with mini-mirror for on-the-go application."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: Can't beat that description, can you? And to top it off...it's true! Though I haven't used the shadows wet (that just scares me), I find this shadow to be of amazing quality and concentration of color. With some creasing, though minor, through the day, it still impresses me with its texture and wearability. And can I help it if the girl in me loves the cute little compact?

Pout Eye Slicks

What They Say: "This range of color shimmers and a clear gloss have a velvety texture that glides on like silk to give a super sheer sheen to lids. Shimmery Eyeslicks act as a great base for eyeshadows, and the clear gloss adds a wet shine over eyeshadows. Once dry, these little wonders have endless staying power.

To use: Apply using the wand to dab color onto lids and blend with finger. To intensify color leave to dry and apply a second layer."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This looks like a tube of lipgloss, down to its sponge applicator. But the soft creamy color inside is definitely for your eyes. Dot the cream onto your lids, and as you smooth it with your finger it instantly turns to a superfine powder texture. I got a very light color, Swing, so the effect for me was mostly a soft shimmer, which stayed put pretty well throughout the day, but did have some creasing in the warm weather. That was after several hours, though, but I did have to swipe the extra color away to even it out. I'm not sure if this would be more apparent with the darker colors.

I didn't get the clear gloss to apply over it, but had something at home I could use, and the results are really pretty. I would recommend not applying it all too thick, because there still was some slight creasing that didn't take as long to happen when glossy.

Clinique Touch Tint for Eyes Cream Formula

What They Say: "Touch-on, glistening colour that starts sheer and builds to a creamy glisten. Velvety, cushiony tints create a dewy finish that lasts all day without creasing. Lightweight, water-resistant formula."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: During my testing, this shadow (in Soft Heather) wasn't exactly all-day-lasting. It did fade a bit for me throughout the day. And as for the creasing? Well...there was a little bit of that as well. The only way I could keep that from happening was to apply it super-thin. I did like the creaminess of it - it was very lightweight and fluffy, with a nice soft texture when applied. But if I rubbed it in a bit more, it could almost disappear. For me, this just wasn't the ultimate cream shadow.

Shiseido Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow

What They Say: "These eye shadows create a glaze of intense color that shimmers from within. Cool to the touch, a dewy sensation spreads shadow evenly over eyelids to keep color moist and lustrous for a remarkably long time. Individual pots of color look brilliant alone or in combination."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This was my very first Shiseido product, if you can believe it. I have been thoroughly impressed. Liquid-type shadows almost ALWAYS crease, no matter what they say. This one, however, stayed put during the day and looked very pretty. This product is a very new addition to their collection. I got the Spring Plum shade, but had an extremely hard time deciding which shade to get, because I loved each one of them at the counter. The Whitelights looked very pretty over the salesgirl's shadow, adding a light touch of tasteful shimmer. I love the instant cooling effect, and its very fine texture changes quickly to a smooth powdery finish immediately.

User Tips: Control the intensity of the color by applying layers. This shadow can be as subtle or as dramatic as you wish, and can also be worn alone or as an accent over your powder shadow.

Lorac Eyeshadow

I used to hate eyeliner.  I'm not sure if I was horrible at applying it or if I was just not used to seeing myself with smoky eyes.  What does this have to do with eyeshadow?  Well, I've been using this Lorac Eyeshadow as eyeliner for a while now (as well as eyeshadow) and it has changed my view on eyeliner.

From the Sephora website: "This gentle, non-irritating formula is infused with rich botanicals to soothe and calm the skin. This versatile range of colors can be used to shade, shadow, and define - creating any look you desire."

My Experience:  I was trying for a new look for evening one Friday afternoon and had the good fortune to stop in Sephora when the manager was available to give a mini-makeover.  I told her what awful experiences I'd had with eyeliners and mascaras in the past, which was why I generally avoided them.  Then she recommended using this Lorac eyeshadow as an eyeliner.  I was worried that I would have an even harder time applying a powder.  I am happy to say, my worries were completely unfounded, and now I have a great eyeliner that applies easily and looks great all night without irritating my eyes.

Tips:  Use a small, slanted eyeshadow brush.  Moisten the tip by putting it under slow running tap water, then blot thoroughly to absorb excess moisture.  Pick up a very small amount of shadow with your brush and line as you normally would, trying to fill in between the lashes.  If you like, you can use a dry brush to smudge it a little when you're done to get an extra smoky look.

M.A.C. Pigment Color Powder

What They Say: "Pigment is a highly concentrated loose colour powder that contains ingredients to help it adhere to the skin. Pigment is available in matte and frosted finishes and comes in an excellent range of colours. Use to create a subtle wash of colour or an intense effect. Pigment does not streak or cake, is easy to blend and long-lasting."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This powder kind of scared me at first, because I get nervous about using anything too shimmery. The shade I got (Pink Opal) helped break me in as it's not too bright. They'll excitedly tell you at the M.A.C. counter that you can use this stuff for your eyelids, cheekbones, etc. I may get more brave about the application later, but for now I just really like this on my eyelids. I haven't had a night out worthy of getting all glitzed up and shimmery-cheeked so far. I have enjoyed my pretty shade though, and what they say about its wearing power and blendability is true - this stuff is SO soft and smooth to apply.

Retail Price: $18.50 (MAC Cosmetics)

Neutrogena Skin-Soothing Eye Tints

What They Say: "This unique eye enhancer soothes tired eyes with a lasting cooling sensation, while shimmering neutral tones give you a bright-eyed, radiant look. When worn under eye shadow, it works as a base to help prevent creasing and fading. Formulated with Protient™, it instantly reduces the appearance of puffiness."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I love, love, LOVE this product!  I tried it in Honey Shimmer. Hardly a juvenile sparkly eye product, this light fluffy cream woke up my tired eyes and had a pleasant cooling sensation. I like to use it as both a base and alone. Don't let the word "shimmering" in the product description fool you - it's got more of a very slight irridescent quality that just adds a brightness to your eyes.

User Tips: Use on the entire lid or just on the inside corners of your upper lids to get a look that says "I didn't stay out all night!

Can You Wear This Trend? A Touch of Gold

glamour-gold.jpg

According to September's issue of Glamour, glimmery shadow takes a surprising twist for fall - "One of the prettiest eye looks from the fall shows: a wash of gold for day. No worries, you won't seem discotesque; the shades are sheer."
Photo: Mark Leibowitz

Melissa Says: I'm pretty used to using shadow with a touch of shimmer during the day, but usually it's a wash of highlight over jewel-toned shadows, and the effect is more from silver than gold. This, however, is a really wearable daytime look, if you keep it toned down with subtly-lined eyes and a touch of peach-hued blush. I just happened to have what turned out to be a perfect subtle gold to use from the set of M•A•C Paint Pots I recently reviewed, Rubenesque, which, when applied with my fingertip, gave just a touch of pretty gold sheen.

The Face of Fall: Bobbi Brown's Metallic Look

"Pump up the volume and go for something a little fabulous - Bobbi's way. The Metallics Collection features four different shade combinations of velvety, shimmering shadows that pack major punch."

Melissa Says: The thing I love about the trios of shadows Bobbi Brown is featuring this season is that they are WEARABLE. Though they pack a shimmery punch, the shades are flattering and ladylike. This is a metallic trend I can get behind without being afraid to look garish in the process. For more information or to order the four sets of shadows featured below, go to bobbibrowncosmetics.com

Smoky Eyes: Can You Wear This Trend?

You've seen it in every fashion magazine: models with dark, smoky eyes, defined and dramatic. I don't usually wear a lot of dark eye make-up. I've got pale, pale skin and blonde hair, so using so much black and gray on my eyes, I really thought I would look like a ghoul. But I found no shortage of photos in magazines where the subject was fair like I am, so I thought, hey, if they can do it, so can I.

I was getting ready for a concert. I had on a tiny little black top, skinny jeans and 4-inch heels, and thought, "this outfit was made for the smoky eye look." And I started experimenting.

(Tip #1: Don't experiment with this look when you actually are planning to be somewhere at a specific time. The third time you get out the eye makeup remover, panic will set in and your makeup application skills may suffer.)

Starting with a clean face, I applied moisturizer and eye cream and followed with concealer, foundation, and bronzer. InStyle magazine recommends starting with a base of moisturizer with some light powder pressed in as a base around the eyes to hold the eyeshadow in place. You're going to be wearing an awful lot of dark eyeshadow and you don't want it all over your face.

Next, I applied white eyeshadow (Revlon ColorStay 12 Hour Eye Shadow in Pure Pearl) over my whole eyelid, all the away up to my eyebrows. This gives your eyebrows a lift and really brightens up the whole eye area.I followed with the lighter pink and plum shades from the Sterling Rose eyeshadow quad (pictured right), also Revlon ColorStay. This is all pretty normal for me; I wear this look to work all the time.

After the lighter shades were applied, I started applying some gray eyeshadow in about a 1/4-inch line above my top eyelash line. I blended it in more around the inner corners of my eyes, but left the line wider and darker at the outer corners of my eyes.

(Tip #2: No matter how dark and smoky the undereyes look in a photo, don't try to emulate it using shadow, especially if you are as pale as I am. You will look like a ghoul. Trust me.)

I then applied my Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner all the way around my eyes from corner to corner. You want the line to be pretty thin and well-defined so that your eyes really pop. After the gel liner, I decided I wanted something even more Jet Black, so I applied a second outline with my Blinc Kiss Me Eyeliner.

(Tip #3: Patience is the key here. Your eyes are the focal point of your face tonight and it's easy to pick out mistakes if your line is smudgy or wobbly.)

The final step is mascara, and you need something ultra-dramatic. I used Urban Decay's Skyscraper mascara over top of the Maybelline XXL mascara's lash primer for extra volume. Curling your lashes is an absolute must.

(Tip #4: Apply your dramatic mascara to the top lashes only. On the bottom lashes, use a lash tint if your lashes are blond or leave the mascara off entirely. Mascara on both the top and bottom lashes when you're wearing that much other eye makeup will not make you look sexy and mysterious, but rather more like Tammy Faye Baker.)

All of the tips I've offered to you are the result of major tactical errors when I was trying out this look. I found it easy to be too heavy-handed, which lead to multiple uses of my eye make-up remover. And still, at the end, I thought I looked less like I belonged in a magazine and more like I belonged in Kiss Army. It seemed like a bit much at first, but it grew on me every time I looked in the mirror. Which was something like every 5 seconds.

When my friend came by to accompany me to the concert, my look was met with rave reviews, so I decided to give this trend a full field trial, first at an upscale martini bar, then at the late-night concert. The smoky eyes were at home in both places; even at the small bar where the concert was held I didn't feel out of place.

You want to know the best part about the whole thing? As my mascara went under my eyes a little and my eyeliner smudged, it didn't mess up the look at all, in fact it may have added to the smoky look as the night progressed. Thr picture on the right was taken near the end of the night, after I'd worn my make-up for nearly 8 hours!

I was doubtful, but I think this is a look that you can pull off even if you are as pale as I am. A little patience and a little experimentation, and this may be a trend you can pull out of your bag to accessorize all of your Saturday night outfits.
